Chapter 31 #4

“I’m sure once Blake drops her command she’ll be just fine.” Noah held his hands over her skin. Already some of the welts have begun to disappear. I made a mental note to have Yaris check to see if the silken threads only caused physical damage and didn’t have any poisoning properties to it.

Micah nodded. “Okay, yeah. I’ll go.”

“I’ll go with him,” Kurt volunteered.

Admittedly it made me feel relieved that Micah didn’t have to go in an unknown location by himself. “Thanks.” I smiled at him.

“No problem,” he said before disappearing with Micah.

“I’m going to ‘wake’ up some of our allies while we wait.” I told the group before I started to look for the people I trusted most.

“We’ll help you look.” Drake volunteered stepping forward with Jaxson, Troy, and Lincoln.

“I’ll mimic you, Blake.” Gavin informed me.

I nodded thankful for his help, while I looked for our friends.

I found Tamara first and placed a hand on her forearm and at the last second I chose to step to the side, knowing by the way her hands were positioned she was in mid-position of releasing one of her wind tunnels.

I looked up and realized a few of the prison guards were in her line of shot.

“Hey guys, can you step back for a few seconds.”

They seemed confused but complied. I nodded, satisfied before telling Tamara. “Continue.”

Sure enough she released a wind tunnel. A few of the prone bodies of our enemies were swept up into it and came crashing down twenty or so feet away with a sickening thud.

Her eyes was wild, still high on adrenaline.

It seemed to take her several seconds to realize the room wasn’t how she remembered.

She looked over at me with a smirk. “Kade?”

Her eyes were red and puffy, and she looked like she had been crying but I had no clue why. She seemed to be handling our foes with ease.

I grinned but it soon faded when I said. “No, me, but Pops and Horatio is missing. We may need your help.”

“I’m here.” She reassured me. “Just tell me what you need from me.”

“If you can find people like Tyler, Sam, Rick, Terrance, Marcel, Anna, Dawn. You know our peeps.”

Tamara’s eyes immediately filled with tears. “You didn’t, see?”

“See what?” I asked in concern.

It was Terrance deep voice, filled with so much pain that answered. “Dawn’s dead, Blake. She got hit the moment we entered the room.”

It felt like someone punched me in the stomach while they reached through my chest and grabbed my heart.

I slowly turned hoping Terrance hadn’t said what I thought he said.

The look of pure devastation on his face and his unchecked tears was enough for me to realize he had spoken the truth.

The edges of my vision darkened, and I felt my body sway.

“No!” I violently shook my head, denying his statement.

My mind filled with memories of her. The first time we met and how insecure I felt knowing she had hooked up with Remy in the past. How we had become friends over time when I realized how loyal and supportive she was.

The movie days and trash talk we did when my guys and I fought.

She was a such a shining light of positivity yet was a complete bad ass.

I couldn’t imagine life without her in it.

“No! You’re lying.” I wildly looked around for her waiting for her to pop out of somewhere, laughing, and telling me it was all a joke.

My eyes finally landed on Kade. He could fix this.

Before my mouth could even open, he was shaking his head, tears falling down his cheeks.

Victoria hugged him and he accepted her embrace.

Ben took a few steps toward them and placed a hand on each of their shoulders.

It was clear that they were presenting a united front.

Any other time I would have been happy to see how close they had gotten.

It was then the pieces slowly began to fall in place. “You knew she was going to die.”

Grief and fury filled me. “Fix it, Kade!” I demanded.

“He can’t, Blake!” Ben argued. “When Ella told us we were going to lose her, he tried. Every time he tried to fix it on his ‘walks’ through time the results were even worse. The deaths were more catastrophic. In one vision we lost Jaxson, Remy, Terrance, and Marcel. He did what he had to do.”

Hot tears poured from my eyes, and I was shaking with the emotions that wanted to erupt from me. “Why didn’t you tell us!”

“He couldn’t!” Victoria argued back. “On his walks he told everyone in one way or another and each outcome was worse than the other. In several of them the twins were taken because we were so preoccupied with saving Dawn. We realized there was nothing we could do to save her.”

The whole time Victoria defended Kade I sought Dawn out. Then I remembered saving Marcel and Terrance from the Replicator. I realized that’s why they had been oblivious to their surroundings.

I ran toward the motionless body of my friend.

A ragged cry exited my throat when I saw the giant gaping hole in the middle of her chest. I didn’t have to look far to figure out what has caused the damage.

A small cannon ball was a few feet away from her.

My knees gave out and I didn’t even notice the pain that ricocheted up my body as my knees smacked against the concrete floor.

I cradled her head in my lap, not caring that her hair was soaked in blood and now my hands.

“You can’t leave me. You promised to help me decorate the twin’s room. I already promised to build a she-shed on the property for you. We were going to do a girl’s trip to the spa. We had too many plans.” I sobbed, trying to brush the hair off her face.

I barely noticed when Micah flashed back into the room his eyes wide with fear. “He has him. Horatio has Pops on the helipad, and a helicopter is on the horizon.”

I didn’t want to leave Dawn but was unable to stay when Remy and a couple of my other guys guided me away.

I wanted to stay with my friend, but as they say time marched on and our work was far from over.

It wasn’t until I felt the world around me begin to shift, I decided to take out all my fury on the man that deserved to feel my wrath.
