Chapter 57

Gabe

Curse words fell from my mouth as I rushed to the window. My moment of hesitation was all she needed to find a way out. Shock. Anger. Hatred. But most of all, the throbbing pulse of betrayal that surged through my blood. It was all I could feel.

Ash hit the ground feet first from the second-story window and then rolled until she landed on her back. Shards of glass surrounded her. She turned her head upward to look at me.

In a single, charged moment, all I could see was another blonde murderer. She’d killed my second mother, and there wasn’t a hint of remorse on her face. Had she been working with the rebels all along? She lied to me about finding Liam tonight. Did she have a part in the fires? The baby girl that I hauled out of the burning house flashed through my mind. Blondes were willing to do anything to gain power, weren’t they ?

My hands balled into fists, and my eyebrows drew together as I stared down at the girl that had changed my world. Maximus was right all along; I never should have doubted him. I never should have let my heart win. He was right—love was weakness. It had blinded me from seeing what was right in front of me.

Ash stood and seemed to double over in pain before she disappeared into the darkness. Without a moment of hesitation, I turned to go after her. She wouldn’t get away that easily. She needed to answer for her crimes.

Maximus still knelt over Regina’s prone body, only making my heart harden that much more toward Ash. She had to have some sort of ability she’d hid from me and lied about. She never would have been able to do this otherwise.

“Gabriel,” Maximus said quietly. “Find her.”

One second later, I was out the door with a slew of soldiers, on my way to hunt down the blonde who killed my other mother. Only this time, I wasn’t a boy anymore. I’d get my vengeance and make the blonde rebel pay.
