Chapter 11 Exposed

Headlines

The call came before sunrise.

Elias Kane had barely finished his morning patrol when his secure phone began vibrating almost continuously. One notification followed another until the screen filled with missed calls, encrypted alerts, and urgent messages from Aegis headquarters.

He answered Evelyn's call first.

Her voice was calm, but only because years of working beside Alex Voss had taught her how to remain composed under pressure.

"You need to see the news."

Eli's expression hardened.

"What happened?"

"They leaked the photographs."

His pulse slowed instead of quickening.

"What photographs?"

"The mountain cabin."

"The ranger station."

"The café in Black Ridge."

"The market where you were undercover."

She paused.

"They've been sent to every major news outlet."

Eli walked back inside the safehouse without another word.

Finn looked up from the kitchen table, immediately recognizing something was wrong.

"Eli?"

He picked up the television remote.

Within seconds, every national news channel displayed the same images.

There they were.

Leaving the safehouse together.

Walking through the farmers' market hand in hand while undercover.

Finn resting his head on Eli's shoulder outside the cabin.

A photograph taken from an impossible distance showed them standing close outside the abandoned ranger station after the storm.

None of the images were intimate.

None were fabricated.

Together, however, they told exactly the story Victor Langford wanted the world to believe.

A banner flashed across the screen.

INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER TOO CLOSE TO SECURITY CEO?

Another channel showed a different headline.

CAN THE PUBLIC TRUST FINN HARLOW'S REPORTING?

A third questioned Eli directly.

HAS AEGIS SECURITY LOST ITS PROFESSIONAL OBJECTIVITY?

Finn stared silently at the television.

"They've turned us into the story."

Eli nodded once.

"Exactly."

Another broadcast began.

Commentators debated whether Finn's investigation into Titan Shield could still be considered impartial.

Others questioned whether Eli had misused company resources to protect someone with whom he was allegedly involved.

One analyst went even further.

"If Mr. Kane allowed personal feelings to influence operational decisions, every client protected by Aegis Security has reason to ask serious questions."

Finn muted the television.

"They're destroying our credibility."

"They're trying."

A secure notification interrupted them.

Emergency Board Meeting – Aegis Headquarters.

Almost immediately, another arrived.

Alex requests immediate conference call.

The attacks had spread beyond Aegis.

Victor wasn't merely targeting Eli.

He was attacking everyone connected to him.

Half an hour later, the large conference screen came alive.

Alex Voss appeared from his office at Voss Mobility.

He looked exhausted.

Jax stood quietly behind him, one reassuring hand resting on Alex's shoulder.

Evelyn joined from headquarters.

"So did Mason, Parker, Lena, and the rest of the senior Aegis team."

Alex spoke first.

"Investors are demanding answers."

Eli wasn't surprised.

"They want Voss Mobility to suspend all contracts with Aegis until the investigation ends."

Finn looked toward Alex.

"And you?"

Alex didn't hesitate.

"I told them no."

Jax smiled proudly.

"They didn't like that answer."

Alex shrugged.

"They rarely do."

Evelyn opened another document.

"It isn't just investors."

"Three corporate clients have requested emergency reviews of their security contracts."

Mason spoke next.

"Our field teams are already answering questions."

"They're standing behind us."

Parker folded his arms.

"The staff aren't worried about the photographs."

"They're worried about you."

Eli looked around the screen.

"I'm fine."

Lena raised an eyebrow.

"You've taught us not to lie during briefings."

A few quiet smiles appeared.

Even now, the team refused to let him carry everything alone.

Another secure message appeared on Evelyn's screen.

She read it before sighing.

"The press already knows you're flying back."

"They're gathering outside headquarters."

Finn looked toward Eli.

"They'll ask about us."

"Yes."

"You could deny it."

Silence settled across the room.

Alex quietly spoke.

"You don't owe anyone your private life."

"No."

Jax added gently,

"But you shouldn't have to hide it either."

Everyone waited.

Not because they needed instructions.

Because they wanted to know what kind of example Eli would choose to set.

The helicopter landed on the roof of Aegis headquarters shortly before noon.

Below them, television vans crowded both sides of the street.

Satellite dishes pointed toward the building.

Cameras waited behind temporary barricades.

Security officers guided employees safely through side entrances while reporters shouted questions from every direction.

Finn watched through the helicopter window.

"They're going to tear us apart."

Eli fastened his jacket.

"They'll try."

Before exiting, he turned toward Finn.

"No matter what happens..."

He spoke quietly.

"...you've done nothing wrong."

Finn held his gaze.

"Neither have you."

The elevator doors opened directly into the executive floor.

Evelyn met them immediately.

"The board is waiting."

"They've seen everything."

"So have I."

The meeting lasted less than thirty minutes.

Several board members worried about public perception.

Others questioned whether Eli should temporarily step aside until media attention faded.

Eli listened to every concern without interruption.

When they finished, he stood.

"I founded Aegis to protect people."

"My judgment has never been influenced by money."

"Or politics."

He paused.

"And it hasn't been compromised by caring about another human being."

No one argued.

Because none of them could point to a single professional failure.

The attacks were personal.

Not operational.

As the meeting ended, Evelyn quietly approached.

"The reporters are still outside."

"I know."

"You can leave through the underground garage."

"It'll avoid the cameras."

Eli looked toward the lobby windows.

Beyond them, hundreds of reporters waited.

Questions.

Speculation.

Accusations.

He thought about every veteran working inside the building.

Every young recruit watching to see how their CEO responded.

Every employee whose family had already been threatened because they refused to abandon Aegis.

Running would protect no one.

He adjusted his tie.

"I'll use the front entrance."

The lobby became completely silent as he walked toward the doors.

Employees stopped what they were doing.

Some looked worried.

Others simply nodded.

Mason stepped forward first.

Then Parker.

Then Lena.

Without saying a word, they quietly took positions behind him.

Not because he asked.

Because they chose to.

The glass doors opened.

A wall of cameras immediately surged forward.

"Mr. Kane!"

"Are you romantically involved with Finn Harlow?"

"Has your relationship compromised the Titan investigation?"

"Should Aegis clients trust your judgment?"

"Will you resign?"

Questions crashed over one another.

Eli stepped to the podium prepared by the communications team.

The crowd gradually fell silent.

He looked directly into the cameras.

"I'll answer one question."

No one interrupted.

"For years, Aegis Security has protected people without asking who they loved, where they came from, or what others thought of them."

His voice remained calm.

Measured.

The same voice that had reassured frightened witnesses and grieving families countless times before.

"I won't begin asking those questions now."

A murmur spread through the crowd.

He continued.

"I will not deny my relationship with Finn Harlow."

"I will not apologize for protecting an innocent man whose life has been repeatedly threatened."

"And I will not allow lies manufactured by Victor Langford to define either of us."

The reporters fell remarkably quiet.

Behind the cameras, Eli noticed several Aegis employees watching through the lobby windows.

Some smiled.

Others simply stood a little taller.

One final question came from the front row.

"Mr. Kane..."

The reporter hesitated.

"...are you saying you love him?"

Eli didn't look toward Finn.

He didn't need to.

The answer had been growing inside him since the mountains, the storms, and the countless quiet mornings over shared coffee.

He met the reporter's eyes with quiet certainty.

"I'm saying that protecting the people we love is never something to be ashamed of."

For the first time that day, no one shouted another question.

Behind him, the employees of Aegis Security began applauding.

It started with one pair of hands.

Then another.

Until the entire lobby echoed with quiet, heartfelt respect.

Eli had just refused to hide.

And every person who had chosen Aegis as their home knew exactly what that courage had cost him.

Standing Beside Him

Finn Harlow watched the press conference from inside the Aegis headquarters lobby.

The communications team had suggested he remain out of sight until the reporters dispersed. From a strategic perspective, it made sense. If only Eli faced the cameras, perhaps the questions would remain focused on Aegis rather than turning into another media circus.

It was a reasonable plan.

It was also the wrong one.

Through the tall glass windows, Finn could see Eli standing alone at the podium with the afternoon sun reflecting off the cameras pointed in his direction.

Hundreds of reporters crowded against the barricades, microphones stretched forward, each person hoping to capture the moment that would dominate tomorrow's headlines.

Eli looked exactly as he always did.

Calm.

Composed.

Steady.

Only Finn knew how much effort that calm required.

He remembered the sleepless nights in the safehouse.

The endless patrols through the forest.

The quiet fear in Eli's voice after the ambush.

"I thought I was too late."

He remembered the veterans who had called Eli not because they feared losing contracts, but because they worried about the man who had given them another chance at life.

He remembered the small gestures that had never been intended for public attention.
