Chapter 15 Final Target
Assault
Elias Kane was already awake.
Years of military service had trained him to recognize the difference between an accident and a deliberate attack. The deep vibration that rolled through the building wasn't caused by structural failure or a vehicle collision.
It was a coordinated breach.
His secure phone began sounding before the echoes had faded.
"Boss!"
Mason's voice came through the encrypted earpiece.
"East vehicle entrance. Controlled explosion. Security barriers are holding, but we've got multiple armed teams moving toward the building."
Eli was already pulling on his tactical vest.
"Casualties?"
"Minor injuries."
"No fatalities."
"Good."
He stepped into the hallway just as emergency lights flooded the building in pulsing red.
Automatic security doors sealed throughout the headquarters.
The lockdown protocol had activated exactly as designed.
Employees emerged cautiously from nearby offices, confusion spreading across their faces.
Eli raised his voice just enough to carry without creating panic.
"Everyone stay calm."
"Follow your evacuation leaders."
"Nobody moves without instructions."
The calm certainty in his voice immediately steadied the room.
People trusted procedures because they trusted the man giving the orders.
Another explosion sounded from outside.
Closer this time.
Lena's voice joined the secure channel.
"They're hitting communications."
"I'm rerouting everything through our backup satellite network."
"Federal agents have been notified."
"Estimated arrival?"
"Twelve minutes."
"Twelve minutes."
Eli repeated quietly.
Long enough for Victor's people to cause catastrophic damage if they reached the evidence.
He keyed another channel.
"Parker."
"I'm here."
"Medical status?"
"We've converted the training room into a treatment station."
"Everyone accounted for except the reception team."
"I'm sending medics now."
"Good."
Eli reached the operations center moments later.
The massive digital display showed live camera feeds from every side of the headquarters.
Black SUVs blocked the surrounding streets.
Masked mercenaries moved with military precision.
Not reckless.
Disciplined.
Victor had hired professionals.
Mason pointed toward the western entrance.
"They're trying to split us."
"They're pushing small teams at multiple access points."
Eli studied the movements for only a few seconds.
"They're creating distractions."
"So where's the real objective?"
Lena enlarged another camera feed.
"Underground archives."
"The evidence vault."
Of course.
Victor wasn't attacking Aegis because he wanted revenge.
He wanted the files.
Financial records.
Witness statements.
Encrypted servers.
Everything that could destroy him.
Eli switched to the building-wide channel.
"Team Alpha."
"Secure the archives."
"Team Bravo."
"Evacuate employees from floors four through seven."
"Charlie Team."
"Protect the witness holding area."
Orders spread instantly through the building.
Nobody questioned them.
Nobody hesitated.
Every person simply moved.
Exactly as they had trained to do.
Outside, another blast shattered the front security gate.
Mercenaries poured through the opening.
The lobby cameras captured every movement.
Eli watched calmly.
"They're committed."
Mason smiled grimly.
"So are we."
The first firefight erupted less than a minute later.
Security officers used reinforced barricades to slow the attackers while evacuation teams guided frightened employees toward protected exits.
Parker's medical staff moved continuously through the corridors, treating injuries while refusing to abandon anyone.
Lena's cyber division worked feverishly to duplicate every critical file onto secure government servers.
If Victor somehow reached the headquarters...
He would still fail.
Eli grabbed his radio.
"Status."
Mason answered immediately.
"Lobby holding."
"Minor injuries only."
"Archive level?"
"Still secure."
Another voice broke through.
"Boss."
It was Evelyn.
"They've breached conference level."
"I'm moving."
Without another word, Eli sprinted down the western corridor.
Smoke drifted through the ventilation system.
Sprinklers activated overhead, soaking the carpet as alarms echoed throughout the building.
Halfway down the hallway he found two frightened administrative assistants trapped behind fallen ceiling panels.
"Mr. Kane!"
"We can't get through!"
Eli immediately knelt beside the debris.
"It's alright."
"I'm here."
Working together with another security officer, he lifted the broken metal framework just enough for both women to crawl free.
"Medical station."
He instructed.
"Follow the blue exit lights."
They nodded repeatedly before disappearing down the corridor.
Eli continued forward.
Every room he passed revealed another example of why Aegis existed.
Employees helping one another.
Veterans shielding frightened interns.
Managers refusing to leave until everyone else had reached safety.
Victor understood money.
He understood fear.
He had never understood loyalty.
That would become his greatest mistake.
Minutes later, Eli reached the secure archive level.
Team Alpha had formed a defensive line outside the reinforced vault.
Mason was already there.
"So far?"
"We're holding."
"Good."
Lena's voice interrupted again.
"Eli."
"I've finished transferring every financial file."
"Greg's evidence."
"Michael Donovan's testimony."
"The offshore accounts."
"Everything now exists on federal servers."
Relief washed quietly through him.
Even if the building fell...
The truth would survive.
Sirens echoed from outside.
Federal response teams were arriving.
Victor's window was closing.
Instead of retreating, however, the attackers became more aggressive.
"They're desperate."
Mason observed.
"They know time's running out."
Eli nodded.
"Keep pressure on them."
Another message appeared in his earpiece.
This one from Alex.
"We're five minutes away."
"No."
Eli answered immediately.
"Stay back."
"You're a target."
"I'm also your friend."
Alex replied calmly.
"You'll have support."
The line ended before Eli could argue further.
A loud crash echoed from the upper floors.
Parker's voice followed almost instantly.
"We've got civilians trapped in the executive wing."
"I'm moving."
Eli turned to Mason.
"You've got command here."
"What about you?"
"I'm getting people out."
Mason didn't argue.
He simply nodded once.
The rescue took nearly twenty minutes.
Smoke filled the executive corridor after another explosive device destroyed part of the ceiling.
Eli and two security officers guided frightened staff members through maintenance passages before reaching a protected stairwell.
Every person made it out safely.
Every one.
By the time Eli returned to the operations center, the battle had begun shifting.
Federal tactical units surrounded the remaining mercenaries.
Several attackers surrendered.
Others attempted to flee.
Victor's assault had failed.
Or so it seemed.
Evelyn looked up from her workstation.
Something in her expression made Eli's stomach tighten.
"What is it?"
She swallowed.
"I can't find Finn."
The room seemed to fall silent.
"He was with the media liaison team."
"They evacuated."
"He wasn't with them."
Eli's pulse slowed.
Not from calm.
From instinct.
"When did anyone last see him?"
Lena checked the internal cameras.
"Seven minutes ago."
"He was helping move witness files toward the secure elevators."
Another screen appeared.
Grainy hallway footage.
Finn.
Walking beside two Aegis officers.
Then...
Smoke.
Power flicker.
The camera cut out.
When it returned...
The hallway was empty.
No Finn.
No officers.
Nothing.
Mason immediately reached for another monitor.
"Checking exterior cameras."
Seconds later, a loading dock feed appeared.
A black transport van accelerated through the damaged security gate.
Its rear doors slammed shut.
Too fast to identify anyone inside.
But one detail stood out.
The Titan Shield insignia painted beneath the license plate.
Nobody spoke.
Eli stared at the screen with terrifying stillness.
Victor hadn't come for the evidence.
Not really.
The evidence was only the distraction.
His real target...
Had been Finn all along.
As the realization settled over the operations center, every person present understood the same thing.
The investigation had just become deeply personal.
And Elias Kane was about to wage the most important rescue mission of his life.
Captive
Consciousness returned in fragments.
The first thing Finn Harlow noticed was the cold.
Not the sharp mountain chill he had grown accustomed to during the weeks at the safehouse, but the damp, metallic cold of concrete walls and rusted steel. Every breath carried the smell of machine oil, dust, and stagnant water.
He kept his eyes closed.
Training from Eli echoed in his mind.
Don't rush.
Listen first.
Voices drifted through the darkness.
"...he'll wake up soon."
"We didn't hit him that hard."
"Boss wants to talk to him himself."
Finn resisted every instinct to move.
Instead, he concentrated on what he could hear.
Footsteps.
At least three people nearby.
Heavy boots.
One person pacing.
A metal door opening somewhere to his left.
A distant generator humming.
Water dripping steadily.
An industrial building.
Old.
Mostly empty.
His wrists weren't tied.
Interesting.
Victor wanted him cooperative.
Not restrained.
Finn slowly opened his eyes.
He sat in a worn metal chair beneath a single hanging light. Around him stretched what looked like an abandoned manufacturing warehouse. Broken conveyor belts disappeared into darkness, while shattered windows allowed thin beams of afternoon sunlight to cut through the dusty air.
Several armed mercenaries watched him from a distance.
One noticed he was awake.
"He's up."
The footsteps approaching were slow and deliberate.
Victor Langford appeared from the shadows wearing an immaculate charcoal suit that looked strangely untouched by the dust surrounding him.
He smiled pleasantly.
"Mr. Harlow."
Finn leaned back in his chair.
"I've had better invitations."
Victor chuckled.
"I imagine you have."
"You've caused me quite a bit of inconvenience."
