Epilogue
Haizley
It had been two days since my arrest and the death of Deputy Beckett Reed. The town had been in an uproar when the news came out about his connection to the man who had been raping women in all the surrounding towns.
Gunner forced me to reschedule my patients, including those connected to the club. He wanted me to take a week.
I gave him three days.
Today was day two, and I was already getting antsy wondering how my patients were doing. I was at the clubhouse sitting with the girls. Gunner had explained that the officers had church every Saturday night. And the whole club only had church once a month.
Tonight was that night. So, I sat with the girls and drank. Well, me and the club girls were drinking. The other old ladies were all still pregnant.
“How are you doing not working?” Sam asked.
“Gunner is driving me crazy. I need to check on my patients.”
“Jack made me stop working at the diner when that shit happened with us. It took some getting used to. But I circumvented his bossy ass by going to the bookstore. If I hadn’t been there the day Ellie came in, Ryder would have scared her away.”
Ellie laughed. “You’re not wrong.”
“That man has gotten ornery in his old age,” Beck shared. “He was always so laid back when we were growing up.”
“Having children does that. They make you anxious about everything,” Sam said.
“Ain’t that the truth. This guy isn’t even here yet and already I’m constantly afraid I’m screwing up.” Beck rubbed her belly. “I didn’t have the best role model in the mom department.”
“You had Grams,” Amber pointed out.
“True.”
“And now you have Maureen.”
We all looked over at the older woman asleep in the recliner. At forty-eight, Maureen was also pregnant. After years of believing she was only meant to have one, she now had a stepdaughter and another child on the way. Pregnancy was kicking her butt, and she often fell asleep when we got together and weren’t actively doing something.
“She really is great. I’m so happy for my dad. And for me too. She’s the mom I always wish I’d had. I can’t wait to meet Colleen.”
“When is she coming to visit?” I asked.
“Not for a few more months. Her uncle doesn’t want her traveling right now. Something about not being able to protect her. Plus, she wanted to wait until it was warm. Apparently, winter in Boston is not the same as winter here. Uncle Sal said he would bring her with him when the baby’s born.”
“I know Maureen is hoping we will all take her under our wings and talk her into moving here,” Sam said.
“We just need to set her up with a biker,” Ellie said.
“Yea, but which one? Remember, she’s related to King. If Micah and I hadn’t been together before we found out I was related to King, he never would have let him touch me. As it was, he wanted to pull his patch when he found out.” She giggled.
The front door opened, and a prospect stepped in. He looked around the room, and when his eyes landed on mine, he looked pained. He walked slowly toward me, and I was anxious about what he was going to say.
“Um, Doc.”
“What’s up, Joey?”
Joey was a new prospect. He had been fired from the motel where he worked at night for refunding Maureen when she refused to stay there since it looked nothing like it showed online.
When he came to King for help, they offered to let him prospect. He was taking care of his little sister and needed something with flexible hours. You didn’t get more flexible than a motorcycle club that made its own rules. And given what Steele had done for Gunner, he made sure it would work for Joey.
“There’s a woman outside. With a kid.”
“Ok. Is she asking for me?”
He looked at the door and then at the other women in the room. Then he looked at the church doors.
“Joey, what’s the problem?” I asked, standing from my seat.
“Well, she asked for Gunner.”
“Ok, then bring her in.”
He moved back to the door and opened it. A woman I recognized walked in, carrying a small blonde child I didn’t.
“Missy? What are you doing here?”
“Haizley?” Her brows furrowed as she gawked at me.
The child lifted her head and looked around.
A gasp behind me had me turning to look at Ellie.
“Danika!”
She rushed over to Missy and tried to take the child from her, but Missy pulled her in tight and turned away.
Ellie scowled at the woman. “Who the fuck are you and what are you doing with my niece?”
“What’s your name?” Missy asked her.
“I asked you first.”
“Ellie, calm down. Let’s hear what’s going on before we cut the bitch,” Beck said, waddling up beside Ellie.
“Oh my God, both of you calm down.” Turning to my best friend, I asked, “Missy, what’s going on?”
“I was asked to find Ellery Thomas. I was told she was connected to my brother’s MC.” She turned to Ellie. “Is that you?”
“Yes. Why do you have her? Where are Dante and Danny?”
“I don’t know. They brought Dani to me in December. A few weeks later, Dante asked me to take care of her. He said no one could know who or where she was. He said if I didn’t hear from him for forty-eight hours to take her to my brother’s MC to find you. I would have been here sooner, but I didn’t know he had moved from Arkansas.”
“Can I hold her, please?”
Missy handed the little girl to Ellie, and she snuggled into Ellie’s neck. She obviously knew her.
“Missy, your brother is in this MC?”
“Yea.”
“The prospect said you were looking for Gunner?”
“Yea. Haizley, what are you doing here? And what happened to your face?”
“Um… well.” I bit my lip, unsure what her reaction would be. Ignoring her second question, I said, “I’m your brother’s old lady.”
“Seriously? Gunner is the guy you told me about? You didn’t say anything about him being in an MC.”
“I knew how you felt about them, and I guess now I know why.”
“We need to tell the guys,” Sam said. “I’ll text Jack.”
A moment later, the church doors opened, and the guys poured out. Gunner made a beeline for me, and when he reached me, he looked at the woman standing beside me.
“Mellie?”
“Lyssa?”
Gunner stiffened beside me, and Missy’s eyes widened in what looked like fear. I turned to where she was looking and Ghost stood there.
“Travis?” Missy whispered.
I looked between the two of them and realized Ghost was the man Missy had met at the bar. Then I looked up at Gunner. His hands were fisted at his side. His nostrils flared.
“Your magic pussy is my fucking sister?”
Oh shit!
