Chapter 13

Chapter Thirteen

Emmersyn: Your sister said you have to go back to base or quit soon, is that even an option?

Caleb: Honestly, I don’t even know if that’s an option but that’s what I told Mom when we received the medical bills. I just learned that the house has not one, but two mortgages and . . . I don’t know how to help.

Emmersyn: But if someone gave you a solution, would you take it?

Caleb: What kind of solution? Selling my kidney? I already considered it, but I don’t think I’ll get enough.

Emmersyn: No, but there are always other options.

Caleb: If I’m desperate enough, maybe I would. They can’t lose the house. It belonged to my grandparents. I wish I knew when things got this bad.

Emmersyn: Life sometimes is unpredictable and you might never get an explanation of why things happened. You just have to learn to adapt.

Caleb: Where did that come from? A fortune cookie?

Emmersyn: Mom, she was very wise.

Caleb:Sounds like it. Have you ever been in a place where you have to make choices, and none of them seem right? Feel like there’s no hope and life just . . . It’s fucking hard.

Emmersyn: Sometimes. I’m somehow in a weird predicament right now.

Caleb: You?

Emmersyn: Not sure how to take that question. I’m a person too, you know. Just because I live in New York and we only have texted a few times, it doesn’t mean I don’t have feelings or problems.

Caleb: I didn’t mean . . . Sorry.

Emmersyn: It’s okay. People usually assume a lot about me without even taking the time to get to know me.

Caleb: So what’s your crossroad or dilemma situation?

Emmersyn: College.

Caleb: You don’t know which one to choose?

Emmersyn: I wish it were that simple. My grandfather died, and we can’t afford the tuition. There might be a way I can finance it, or I could just work and save until I can pay for it.

Caleb: Go with the choice where you can finance it.

Emmersyn: Yeah, but it involves doing something that doesn’t exactly sit well with me. I’d need help from someone specific—what if they say no?

Caleb: What are we talking about here? Some Ocean’s Eleven-style heist?

Emmersyn: Nope. Great conspiracy theory though.

Caleb: I have a few more, assuming you’re up to no good.

Emmersyn: It’s for a good cause. If I do that, it could benefit many more, not just my college tuition.

Caleb: Then do it. I’m sure you’ll find the right person.

Emmersyn: Let me gather the courage to ask for help.

Caleb: Good luck, I believe in you.
