Chapter Twenty-Nine
IAN
It felt beyond good to have Jane back in my arms. It had only been weeks, but damn, I had missed her so much.
I cataloged the feel of her, every little detail—her subtle scent, her softness against me, the little sound she made in her throat when my palm moved up and down her back in a soothing pass, and the raspy sound of her voice when she murmured, “I missed you.”
She leaned back to peer up at me, precisely when my phone vibrated in my pocket. It was in my shirt pocket, so she felt it.
“Should you get that?” she prompted when I ignored it through three entire vibration cycles.
“Not right now.”
“What if—?”
I cut her off, putting a finger over her lips. “I don't care if it's something about that damn case. I've done my part. Now, come on, let's go back to my place. We can get takeout for dinner on the way.”
Because of our habit of traveling on the weekends, I’d grown to love getting takeout with her. It meant it was just us.
She adjusted her backpack on her shoulders, and I reached for her hand, lacing my fingers through hers as we walked to my car.
As much as I wanted the weekend to be just us, it wasn't. I was inundated with phone calls as the main players were working on a plea deal.
There were more reporter calls and calls from the other companies involved in the consortium.
Meanwhile, I finally set in motion concrete plans to move to Boston.
Nothing would be public, not for now. My lease was up on this condo in six months, which meant I could be moving up to Boston in the fall, my favorite time of the year.
“What do you think about a weekend in Haven’s Bay soon?” I asked as we lay in the darkness later that night.
I had just gotten my breath back after Jane and I both went flying. With all the tumult of late, I craved the touchstone of Haven’s Bay. I needed it with Jane.
“That sounds perfect. Where should we stay?”
“My family's place.”
“Is that a thing we can do whenever? Do you need to check with your siblings?”
“I guess I'll let them know I'm going, but that's about it.”
I could feel the curve of her smile against my shoulder where her head rested. She pressed a kiss to my collarbone, and warmth radiated in spirals from that point.
“Okay, I'll take a weekend in Haven’s Bay anytime,” she whispered.
