Chapter 33
Hawk
The ride took us about an hour south. What started off as a beautiful day became overcast and cool quickly.
But the chill on my skin was welcome since it helped keep me alert.
Sleeping on the floor wasn’t the best way to get shut-eye, even though I’d had to do it plenty of times.
Honestly, the tension between us was far worse than my makeshift bed.
Even though we didn’t really talk it out, or fuck it out, the air seemed clear between Kat and me, leaving me free to worry about the task at hand.
We stopped at Destiny’s Desires before we got too far off the highway because I didn’t want the whole caravan too tight-knit.
If we did stumble onto Leo and his crew we’d need them close, but couldn’t be obvious until we were ready to move in.
The homes were all close enough that I decided to split into three groups for recon to save time and keep us spread out.
Coop kept the truck close to my group and was on alert for any inbound calls or texts.
Petrov was hanging back with him in his Escalade.
I wasn’t sure what we’d find. I told everyone if they confirmed sightings at their location to touch base, but would regroup before moving in.
So far, no word from Falcon or Eagle who were heading the other groups. I was finally pulling close to my address and slowed, trying to keep the engine as low and steady as possible while I crept by to see if I could get eyes inside.
Looking through the gate, I didn’t notice any vehicles, but the house was set far back and they could be parked elsewhere.
We turned around down the street and cruised in the opposite direction, still unable to see anything. We couldn’t linger too long, because a lot of these homes would have security cameras.
Rooster flanked me, but I motioned for him and the others to follow. I needed to get somewhere to park and check in with the others.
We drove a few miles and pulled into a gas station. It was buzzing with Rolls-Royces, a Bugatti, and an Aston Martin. I unhooked my helmet and pushed it up, still sitting on my head.
Rooster grimaced as he looked around. “We need to get out of here soon.”
“Don’t worry. They don’t care about us,” I said, pulling my phone out.
“Not until their little wives realize we’re over here,” Rod said.
“Those aren’t their wives in the passenger seat, that’s their mistress,” Scar said.
He worked at the tattoo shop and didn’t stay at the clubhouse, but he met us at the strip club on the way down.
Looking at him, his name didn’t make sense.
He kept his brown hair short, not as styled as mine but neat, and he looked more like a walking ad than a biker.
But under his t-shirt he was covered in scars from old fights.
Knives, guns, hands, and a woman with a crow bar.
“Well, no time to entertain them today.” Shooting texts off to Eagle and Falcon, I was about to put my phone away when a text from Keys came through that said, “Call me.”
I hadn’t reached out to him, and he had our coordinates. I wondered if he had found the Capo.
“Hawk,” Keys said when he answered the phone, his voice urgent and shaky.
My hackles rose. “Did you find them?”
“We have a situation.” There was some commotion in the background. “I’m sending the address. But it’s close to that airport I found.”
“Are they there? And what the fuck are you doing? What’s that noise?”
“I’m heading up. I’ll meet you there.”
He’s leaving? Even before Pops went down, Keys hadn’t gone on any serious runs for a while. Just some local meet ups with existing customers. He was tech. He could hold his own, but he was most comfortable in the computer room.
I worked to keep my voice even. “What’s up, Keys? What are we about to ride into?”
“Prez. Hawk. I…”
“Tell me,” I barked, losing my patience.
“It’s Mama Hen. And…”
My skin heated as rage filled my veins. “Ma? They got Ma?” I asked, flagging the guys.
Rooster leaned over so I said, “Text Eagle and Falcon now. Oh, and Coop and Petrov. Tell them to get to the address Keys is sending,” I said, moving the receiver.
Moving it back so Keys could hear me clearly, I said, “We’re on the way. Don’t move in until I get there.”
“Hawk!” Keys shouted through the phone.
I was already reaching to pull my helmet back down so I shot back, “What? We’re at least an hour and half out if not more.”
“They have Katya, too.”
My breath hitched so dramatically that I coughed. My heart thumped, fighting to get out of my chest. “Kat? My Kat?”
Rooster’s face dropped and he grabbed his phone again, dialing out.
“What do you mean they have Kat? How the fuck… how did that happen?”
“I’ll catch you up later. I’ll meet you there. Watch for my ping,” Keys said before he ended the call.
Rooster was still on the phone, but after a short wave to get his attention, I pulled my helmet down, fired the bike up, and peeled out onto the street. Cars laid on the horn as I slipped around and in front of them.
I couldn’t wait for the others to get their shit together. My woman and my mother were in danger.
