Chapter 8 #2
By the time he walked back into the bedroom, Devyn had finished up her food. She glanced up at him, and he saw the hearts in her eyes, even though she tried to mask them. That tough girl act was back, but that was okay with him. He’d break through that shit without the help of liquor soon enough.
“You ready?”
She stood and nodded. “Thank you for the food.”
“That was nothin’, love.” He waved her off before he grabbed her hand and walked her out of the room.
This time as they walked through the house, he gave her a proper tour. He pointed out Gideon and Glimmer’s room, though this was no longer their main house either. He showed her his office and the guest rooms as well as the meeting room and amenities downstairs.
Everything had been cleared out and cleaned up since the party last night, so the space looked completely different.
“This is a really cool spot you have for your club,” she admitted.
“I tried to think of everything we might need to make it a home away from home,” Haze replied as he opened the front door.
The roar of engines hit them full blast, and Haze grinned. He loved the vibrations in his chest and the loud noises. Since he was a kid, chaos had been what he thrived in. Motorcycles caused discord to bounce around inside him, and it excited him.
Squeezing Devyn’s hand, he weaved his way through the throng of club members and stopped in front of his bike. He thought about bringing out one of his newer babies today, but his old faithful never let him down. It was the same bike Devyn had admired the day they met with his name on the side.
Now, she ran a manicured hand down the side lovingly, which made his dick hard. He loved that she appreciated his first baby. Nothing could turn him on more.
“Who are you racing against?” she asked. Haze grinned and nodded toward Pup, who leaned against his sleek red bike with the Vicious Kings crest on the side. “Aw, the baby?”
Haze frowned. “I’m the only baby you need to be worried about right now.”
She giggled. “Is that so?”
He stepped closer to her, and the smile fell from her face. Haze knew it was because she felt how serious he was. The tension between them was palpable. There was no way he was the only one that felt it.
“Stop playin’ wit’ me, Thicka. Don’t be cooin’ at that lil nigga like he can’t handle an ass whuppin’. I just need you to cheer me on. Can you do that for me?”
Devyn swallowed before she nodded her head and spoke in a breathy whisper. “Yes.”
“Good girl.” He kissed the top of her head before he called everyone’s attention.
“We ’bout to get started. G and Dame, y’all are up first.”
Gideon’s big ass walked his large bike onto the street where Dame was already in position. Haze watched as the two talked shit and clowned around while two club vixens took their spots in the center of the street to start the race.
Devyn elbowed him. “Who are they? Are women a part of the club too?”
Haze could tell she had been dying to ask that question since the previous night. Club vixens had been all over the compound last night.
“Nah. We call them club vixens. They just kick it wit’ us.” Suck our dicks, do our dishes, wash our bikes . . . But he didn’t say all that. He didn’t need to. Now that she was here, he had no purpose for a damn vixen or any other woman.
“I see.” She pursed her lips, and Haze chuckled before he addressed the crowd again.
“Y’all know the rules. This is just for fun. Practice. We gotta be at our best for the big race in a few weeks. No cheating, go the full six blocks before you turn around, and come back.”
Gideon and Dame nodded before the club vixens raised their hands. As soon as they lowered them, Gideon and Dame took off.
Club members cheered, while Haze dropped an arm around Devyn. Having her there and a part of his world made his heart happy as shit.
“We won’t really be able to see the race,” she noted as they disappeared down the street.
“Nah. Races are kind of boring if you’re just in the crowd,” he admitted.
“Hey, where’s Kyomi and Deja?” Devyn asked as she looked around the crowd.
“They went home last night after the party ended.” He didn’t know if she’d heard his conversation on the phone the night before or not, but he hoped she didn’t. He didn’t want to scare her away again or make her think that any kind of danger could ever touch her, because it couldn’t and wouldn’t.
Her brows dipped as if she was trying to remember something, but she shook her head and focused back on the conversation. “They were nice. I wish I had more time to talk to them.”
Relief filled Haze. “You tryna be around my family?”
His shit eating grin caused her to roll her eyes.
“I didn’t even mean it like that. I’m just a girl’s girl, and I can tell they are too.” She brushed him off.
“Yeah, aight. Let me find out you tryna gain a cousin and sister-in-law,” he joked.
She elbowed him. “You’re always talking so crazy.”
“Why’s it crazy?”
She looked down at the ground. “Because you don’t even know me. How can you talk about marriage and stuff if you don’t even know if we’re compatible?”
“Because I know God sent me to you,” he replied with a shrug. It was that simple to him.
Before she could open her mouth to respond, the sound of engines permeated the air. Cheers sounded around them as Gideon and Dame flew down the street and came to a stop in front of the compound.
Gideon won by a few feet, and Haze whooped as he looked over at Rolla, one of the club members. “You owe me three stacks, nigga!”
Rolla grinned and waved him off. Haze laughed and picked Devyn up and kissed her. “I told you. You my good luck charm.”
She giggled. “Boy, put me down.”
“Never.”
“Aye, Haze, we got a situation.” Gideon’s voice thundered through the crowd.
With Devyn still in his arms, Haze turned to look at Gideon. The smile had fallen off Haze’s face when he saw how serious his best friend looked.
“What’s wrong?”
“Blue Boyz. They were waiting on us just outside our security zone. Our men are on their tail, but I feel like it might be a trap. I think we need to ride out.”
Haze shook his head in irritation. He was tired of this bullshit, and one glance at Devyn’s worried face made rage boil just underneath the surface. With resolve, he carried Devyn through the crowd and placed her on her feet right outside her car.
“Unlock the door, love.” He wanted to treat this situation delicately so she didn’t run.
“What’s going on?” she asked with fear lacing her voice.
“Just a little situation. I need you to go home. I’ma have a couple of my niggas follow you to make sure you get home alright. Okay?”
“Haze—”
“Baby, I just need an okay from you right now.”
Devyn looked at him for a second longer, like she had something she wanted to say, but she unlocked her car and got in.
“Just be safe,” she muttered.
Haze leaned in and kissed her before he called out to a couple of club members. “Dame, Trilla, follow my girl home and make sure she’s good. Everyone else, ride out.”
Haze closed her door and tapped on the window. She rolled it down, and he looked into her eyes intently. “Everything’s cool, aight? Go home and get some rest. I’ll call you later.”
She nodded, and that was all the confirmation he needed to get his mind focused.
Haze ran over to his bike, turned the engine over, put his helmet on, and took off down the street. He allowed Gideon to lead the way since he knew where the Blue Boyz were last spotted.
After turning on his headset, he turned to the private channel for him and Gideon as wind whipped past them.
“Talk to me, G.”
“Security said they’re east four blocks. They don’t really seem to have a destination in mind.”
“You thinkin’ it’s a trap?” Haze asked. The last thing he wanted to do was put his members in danger.
“Could be. I say we run at them from different angles.”
“Bet.”
Haze switched the channel and spoke to everyone. “Targets are four blocks east. I need y’all to split. Let me get ten niggas to approach from the west side, and five on either side. Ten more niggas, follow me and G. Everyone else, spread out.”
Haze didn’t need to look back to know his instructions were followed. He switched back to the private channel to talk to Gideon just when flashing lights surrounded them.
“Fuck! These niggas called the people on us?” Haze asked, irritation bubbling over as he pulled over to the side of the street.
They were still in a residential area, so they were definitely causing a huge scene with all the bikes and now the police. If Haze looked at this from the outside looking in, he would think they were the bad guys who were up to no good, when that was far from the truth.
Haze realized that was the Blue Boyz plan all along. They’d been trying to paint the Vicious Kings as the bad guys since the beginning, to box them out. What they failed to realize was that Haze was great friends with the police department, and that relationship couldn’t be broken.
“These niggas is wild.” Gideon’s chuckle in Haze’s ear caused him to shake his head.
“This shit is ridiculous.”
Now he had to spend his morning setting shit straight with the police and cleaning this bullshit up.
