Chapter 12

The envelope arrives on a Tuesday. Standard manila, certified mail, the return address a law firm in Zurich whose name I can’t pronounce.

Inside: a cover letter from Simone — my attorney, the one Freya hired, the one who has been handling every piece of legal communication so I don’t have to — explaining that the Swiss Transportation Safety Investigation Board has released its preliminary findings.

The American NTSB has filed a concurrent report. Both documents are enclosed.

I set the envelope on the kitchen table.

I make coffee. I drink the coffee slowly, the way I’ve trained myself to drink it since I replaced the machine — four minutes steep, pour, hold the cup, taste it.

The ritual matters. The ritual says: I am in control of the next thing that happens.

The report will wait. The coffee comes first.

The apartment is quiet. A Tuesday morning, mid-autumn, the light through the windows that thin gold Manhattan gets when the angle is low.

Freya is at work. I am alone, which is how I want to be for this.

Some things require an audience. Some things require a witness.

And some things require solitude — the privacy of a woman reading the official account of the worst thing that ever happened to her.

I finish the coffee. I wash the cup. I dry it and put it back in the cabinet. Then I sit down at the table and open the report.

It’s 147 pages. The cover page is clinical — case number, date, location, aircraft type (Gulfstream G650, registration number I’ve never seen before, a string of letters and numbers that reduce the plane I nearly died in to a data point).

I flip past the summary — I’ll read the summary last, after I’ve read everything else, because I want the details before the conclusions, the evidence before the verdict.

The first section is meteorological. I read it the way I’d read a patient’s chart — systematically, without emotion, letting the data accumulate before I form an assessment.

The weather station at Lauterbrunnen recorded the following: temperature at crash time, 11,000 feet, minus fourteen Celsius.

Wind speed twenty-three knots, gusting to thirty-eight.

A cold front was approaching from the northwest at a speed that the meteorologists describe as “rapid” — their word, not mine — with an estimated arrival time that put the first severe weather approximately ninety minutes after impact.

Visibility at crash time: adequate. Visibility thirty minutes after crash time: deteriorating.

Visibility sixty minutes after crash time: near zero.

I do the math in my head. The crash. Then twelve minutes of searching.

Then the descent — forty-two minutes, according to Kellan’s account.

That puts them off the mountain at roughly fifty-four minutes post-impact.

The severe weather arrived at approximately ninety minutes.

They had thirty-six minutes of margin. Except the visibility started deteriorating at thirty — which means they were descending in worsening conditions for the last twelve minutes, and the storm caught them eight minutes from the refuge, exactly as Kellan said.

Jonas’s assessment of a twenty-five-minute window was conservative but correct.

If they’d stayed to search for ten more minutes, they would have been descending in near-zero visibility with a man who couldn’t walk straight.

The probability models in the report run three scenarios.

In the scenario where they stay ten additional minutes: estimated survival probability forty-one percent.

In the scenario where they leave when they did: estimated survival probability eighty-seven percent.

The gap is forty-six percentage points. The gap is the math.

I sit with the meteorological section for a long time.

The numbers do what numbers do — they remove the abstraction.

They replace “the weather was bad” with minus fourteen and thirty-eight-knot gusts and forty-one percent.

They replace “it was getting dark” with specific minute markers.

They replace “Jonas said the math didn’t work” with the probability models that prove he was right.

The second section is the search grid.

This is the part I’ve been waiting for. This is the part that has lived in my mind since I first heard the number: forty meters.

The report includes GPS track maps. Every person on that mountainside was carrying a device — phones, watches, the G650’s emergency locator transmitter.

The investigators reconstructed the movements of every individual from impact to departure.

Kellan’s track. Jonas’s track. The two crew members. The search pattern they walked.

I read the map legend. I read the scale bar. I read the coordinate grid. Then I look at the tracks.

Kellan and Jonas searched in a roughly circular pattern, starting from the forward section of the fuselage where they’d exited.

They moved outward in arcs — not random, not panicked, but systematic, the kind of search pattern a man trained in security operations would run.

Jonas was leading the search grid. Kellan was following, calling my name, checking behind debris.

Their search covered approximately seventy percent of the accessible debris field.

The remaining thirty percent — the section where I was pinned, where the fuselage slab had come to rest against a rock formation in a slight depression — was on the far side of the main wreckage, partially obscured by a section of wing that had separated on impact and landed at an angle.

The closest point of their search to my position: forty-two meters.

Not forty — forty-two. The report rounds to forty in the summary, but the GPS data is precise.

Forty-two meters. At the seven-minute mark of their twelve-minute search, Jonas’s track passes within forty-two meters of where I was lying.

I close my eyes. I can see it. The mountainside, the debris, the fading light.

Jonas moving through the wreckage with purpose, Kellan behind him shouting my name.

And forty-two meters away — thirty-nine steps if you’re walking through snow, fewer if you’re running — I am under a slab of fuselage, tapping a piece of armrest against metal, my jaw locked from the cold, my voice gone, my ribs making every breath a negotiation with pain.

I open my eyes and look at the map again.

The GPS tracks are color-coded — blue for Jonas, red for Kellan, green for the crew members.

Kellan’s track shadows Jonas’s for most of the search, but at two points it diverges: once when he moved toward a section of tail that had separated on impact, and once when he circled back to the forward fuselage — the cabin they’d been sitting in — as if something pulled him there.

I can see it in the data. The instinct to check the place where he last knew I was, where the seats were, where the seatbelts held.

He went back to start. He tried to retrace the logic of where the impact would have sent me.

It wasn’t enough. The depression where I was lying is a geological feature — a shallow bowl in the rock face, maybe two meters deep, invisible from more than thirty meters away unless you’re standing above it.

The fuselage slab that landed over me created a lean-to effect, like a tent.

From the search path, it would have looked like debris against rock.

Just another piece of airplane on a mountain full of pieces of airplane.

Forty-two meters. The length of an Olympic swimming pool, almost exactly. Two of them end to end, a distance I’ve swum a hundred times in my life, a distance that means nothing in a pool and means everything on a mountain in fading light with wind and snow and time running out.

The wing section is the key. If the wing hadn’t separated the way it did — if it had fallen three degrees further east — it wouldn’t have blocked the sightline between the main search area and the depression where I was trapped.

The report says this explicitly: “The position of the separated wing section created a visual obstruction between the primary search corridor and the victim’s location.

” Visual obstruction. A piece of airplane fell in a particular direction because physics sent it there, and that direction was the difference between being found in seven minutes and being found in twelve hours.

I read the section again. I read it a third time.

I look at the GPS tracks, the concentric arcs, the moment at the seven-minute mark when Jonas’s track curves away from my position — not because he chose to stop, but because the wing section blocked what was beyond it, and he followed the debris he could see instead of the space he couldn’t.

He didn’t miss me because he wasn’t looking. He missed me because physics put a wall between us.

The third section is depositions. Jonas Decker’s is forty-three pages long and reads like a military after-action report — precise, chronological, emotionally flat. I read every word.

Jonas describes the moment of impact. The assessment.

The twelve-minute search, which he calls a “hasty search protocol” — the terminology of someone who has trained for this, who knows the difference between a hasty search and a deliberate one and knows that the conditions permitted only the first. He describes Kellan’s behavior: “Mr. Carmichael was focused, responsive, and cooperative during the search. He called the victim’s name repeatedly and checked debris sections I directed him toward.

At no point did he hesitate or refuse to search. ”
