Chapter 5

Sweet and Flirty

The small ice cream shop on Main Street smelled like waffle cones and chocolate fudge. Maddie Carter slid onto a bench with a cone of strawberry swirl, her cheeks pink from the brisk evening air.

Ryan Harper plopped down beside her, balancing a towering cone of cookies and cream. “I hope you’re ready for some serious competition,” he teased, holding up his cone like a trophy.

Maddie laughed. “Competition? You’re on. But remember, I’m sweeter than I look.”

“Is that a challenge?” he asked, raising an eyebrow.

“It’s a warning,” she said with a smirk, licking the tip of her cone.

They ate in comfortable silence for a few moments, the warmth of the shop contrasting with the cool autumn breeze outside. Maddie found herself stealing glances at him, noticing the way his eyes crinkled when he laughed, the tilt of his head when he concentrated on his ice cream.

“So,” Ryan began, “you’re fast on the ice, witty off it… What’s the secret, Carter?”

Maddie laughed. “Hard work and stubbornness. Mostly stubbornness.”

“That explains a lot,” he said, grinning. “Including why I like chasing you on the rink.”

Her heart skipped a beat at the playful remark. “Chasing me?” she repeated, pretending to be scandalized.

“Yeah,” he said, leaning closer, his voice lowering. “I like the chase. And I like getting to know you… piece by piece.”

Maddie’s cheeks flushed, and she looked down at her cone, trying to hide her smile. “Piece by piece, huh? Careful… I might start thinking you’re serious.”

“I am serious,” he said softly, his blue eyes locking onto hers. “About this… about us. About seeing where this goes.”

For a moment, the noise of the shop and the chatter around them faded. All Maddie could feel was the warmth of him beside her and the thrill of realizing she wanted this too.

“I think I like it,” she admitted, voice quiet but steady. “This… whatever we’re doing.”

Ryan smiled, his fingers brushing hers across the bench. “Good,” he said. “Because I don’t plan on stopping.”

As they finished their ice cream, laughing over sticky fingers and shared bites, Maddie realized that the season ahead — fast practices, scrimmages, and countless challenges — suddenly felt even more exciting. Not because of the game, but because of him.

And for the first time, she wasn’t worried about the competition. She was ready to see where this playful, flirty, unpredictable romance would lead.
