Chapter 14
Complications
Monday morning arrived with the usual chaos of practice and schoolwork. Maddie Carter skated into the rink, expecting the usual easy camaraderie with Ryan Harper. Instead, she found whispers and teasing glances from a few teammates.
“Looks like someone’s got a distraction,” one of the girls murmured, smirking.
Maddie flushed, ignoring the comment, but Ryan noticed immediately. After practice, he caught up to her by the lockers.
“Hey, are you okay?” he asked, concern knitting his brow.
“I’m fine,” she said, though her voice carried a slight edge. “It’s nothing.”
Ryan didn’t press, but Maddie could see his frustration. He hated seeing her upset. “If it’s about them,” he said, nodding toward a group of teammates chatting in the distance, “ignore it. We know what’s real.”
Maddie smiled faintly. “Thanks, Ryan. I just… don’t like the whispers. Makes everything feel more complicated than it is.”
Later, during a team meeting, a scheduling conflict added to the tension. Ryan had to choose between attending an important game with another team he was helping coach and their planned study session together. Maddie understood logically, but her heart sank.
“I get it,” she said softly when he explained. “You have commitments… I just wish we had more time.”
Ryan took her hand, giving it a gentle squeeze. “Me too. I don’t want to let this — or anything else — come between us.”
The day ended with a quiet walk home, each lost in thought. Maddie realized that romance wasn’t just about playful moments or stolen kisses; it was also about patience, understanding, and navigating obstacles together.
When Ryan finally leaned close, brushing a strand of hair from her face, he whispered, “We’ll figure it out, Maddie. Step by step.”
She nodded, her heart swelling. “Step by step,” she repeated, realizing that this challenge, like the others before it, was just another chance to grow closer.
And as they walked side by side into the fading evening, Maddie understood that love — like hockey — required teamwork, trust, and the willingness to keep playing, even when the game got complicated.
