Chapter 18
Words Unspoken
Maddie Carter sat at her desk, staring at the stack of homework in front of her, when her phone buzzed. It was a text from Ryan: “Hey, can’t make practice today. Family thing. Sorry.”
She frowned, a mix of disappointment and frustration bubbling up. They had planned to review strategies together, and now he wouldn’t be there.
Later that evening, Ryan called. “Hey… sorry I missed practice,” he said, his tone apologetic but distracted.
“It’s fine,” Maddie replied, though her voice was cooler than she intended. “Just… wish you’d told me sooner.”
“I did!” he said quickly. “I texted you… maybe you didn’t see it?”
“I saw it,” she said quietly. “I guess I just… wanted you there. We needed the time.”
A tense silence followed. Ryan sighed. “Maddie… I don’t want us to fight over this. I like spending time with you — I really do. But I have responsibilities too.”
“I know,” she said, softening. “I just… get worried when we don’t have time together. I like being with you, Ryan. And I don’t want us to drift because of small things like this.”
He paused, then said gently, “We won’t. I promise. We’ll figure it out. Step by step.”
Maddie smiled faintly, the warmth returning to her chest. “Step by step,” she echoed.
By the end of the call, the tension had eased, replaced by understanding. Maddie realized that relationships weren’t always smooth — even playful, lighthearted romances like theirs could face challenges.
But she also knew that trust, communication, and patience would see them through. And as she set her phone down, Maddie felt a renewed certainty: whatever obstacles came their way, she and Ryan would face them together.
