Chapter 20

Together, Always

The rink was quiet in the early morning, the ice smooth and glistening under the overhead lights.

Maddie Carter laced her skates, feeling a familiar thrill as she prepared for another practice.

But today, her thoughts were elsewhere — on Ryan Harper, and the bond that had grown stronger through laughter, challenges, and shared moments.

Ryan arrived, carrying his gear with a smile that made her heart skip. “Morning, Carter,” he said, tossing her a playful wink.

“Morning, Harper,” she replied, smiling back.

Practice was seamless. They moved together effortlessly, passing, shooting, and covering each other as if the ice itself recognized their rhythm.

But more than the game, it was the quiet glances, the unspoken support, the easy laughter during breaks — all of it reminding Maddie that their connection was deeper than she had ever imagined.

After practice, they sat on the bench, catching their breath. Ryan reached over, brushing a strand of hair from her face. “You know,” he said softly, “I used to think hockey was the most important part of my life. But now… I think it’s us. You and me. Everything else comes after.”

Maddie felt her chest swell with warmth. “I feel the same,” she admitted. “You’ve made everything — practices, games, even mistakes — feel lighter. Better. And more fun.”

He smiled, his hand finding hers. “Then let’s promise something,” he said.

“Anything,” she whispered.

“Step by step,” he said, echoing a phrase they had used so many times. “We face challenges, we laugh, we win, we lose… but we do it together. Always.”

Maddie’s eyes shimmered. “Together, always,” she agreed.

As they stood, hands entwined, the rink around them seemed to glow with possibility.

The season ahead might hold more challenges — tournaments, school, and life itself — but for Maddie Carter and Ryan Harper, the most important victory was already theirs: a love built on trust, laughter, and unshakeable partnership.

And as they skated off the ice together, side by side, Maddie knew, without a doubt, that this was just the beginning of their story — a story filled with joy, connection, and the kind of love that could withstand anything.
