Chapter 4

Fireside Moments

As the afternoon sky turned a soft shade of pink, Holly Mason returned to the inn, cheeks still rosy from the snowball fight. She found Lucas already inside, carrying a tray with mugs of steaming hot chocolate and a plate of freshly baked cookies.

“Thought we could warm up a bit,” he said, setting the tray down on the small table by the fireplace. The fire crackled, casting a golden glow across the cozy room.

Holly smiled, settling into the armchair opposite him. “You really think of everything, don’t you?”

Lucas grinned. “Only when it comes to making sure you’re happy.”

They sipped their hot chocolate in comfortable silence at first, the aroma of cocoa and cinnamon wrapping around them like a blanket. Holly glanced at Lucas, noticing the way the firelight made his eyes sparkle.

“You know,” she said softly, “this… this feels like exactly how a holiday should feel. Cozy, warm, and… special.”

Lucas leaned back, stretching his legs toward the fire. “Special, huh? I like the sound of that. Especially with you.”

Holly’s heart skipped, a flutter she couldn’t hide. “You always know what to say,” she whispered, her eyes meeting his.

He smiled, brushing a loose strand of hair from her face. “Only the truth,” he said, voice gentle.

The warmth of the fire, the scent of cocoa, and the quiet intimacy of the moment made time seem to slow. Holly felt her hand inch closer to his across the table, and before she realized it, their fingers had intertwined.

Lucas squeezed her hand softly. “I’m really glad you came to Maplewood, Holly. This… us… it feels right.”

Holly’s chest swelled with emotion. “Me too, Lucas. I didn’t expect to find… this. Not on a holiday.”

He leaned slightly closer, his forehead brushing hers. “Maybe the best things are the ones you don’t plan for,” he murmured.

Holly closed her eyes for a moment, savoring the warmth of the fire and the closeness of Lucas. When she opened them, she found him smiling softly, hope and affection shining in his eyes.

And in that quiet, fireside moment, Holly realized that this holiday was no longer just an escape. It was the beginning of a story she wanted to continue, long after the snow had melted and the festival lights had faded.
