Chapter 14
Morning Warmth
Holly Mason awoke to the soft glow of sunlight streaming through the inn’s frosted windows. The snow outside glimmered like diamonds, but the warmth in the room was not from the fire alone — Lucas was already there, sipping his cocoa and watching her with a gentle smile.
“Good morning,” he said softly, setting down his mug. “Sleep well?”
Holly stretched and smiled. “Better than I have in months.” She swung her legs off the bed, feeling the chill on her feet.
Lucas moved closer, wrapping a blanket around her shoulders. “Just in case you’re cold,” he said with a wink.
They sat together by the window, watching the snow glisten and listening to the quiet town waking up. Lucas poured them both more cocoa, and they laughed over small stories from the festival — little mishaps, silly games, and the chaos that had somehow made the holiday unforgettable.
Holly leaned her head on his shoulder, sighing contentedly. “I don’t want this holiday to end,” she admitted softly.
Lucas tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. “Then maybe it doesn’t have to. We can keep the magic going… even after you leave Maplewood.”
Her heart fluttered. “Do you really mean that?”
“I do,” he said, eyes warm and steady. “I don’t want this to be just a holiday romance. I want… us.”
Holly’s chest swelled with emotion. She had come to Maplewood expecting peace and quiet, but instead, she had found laughter, snowball fights, fireside moments, and something she hadn’t expected: love. Real, tender, and alive.
For the rest of the morning, they lingered in the inn, talking, laughing, and stealing quiet kisses. Outside, the snow continued to fall gently, but inside, the warmth they shared was stronger than any winter chill.
As Holly prepared to pack her things later that day, she realized that no matter what the future held, this holiday, these moments, and Lucas would remain with her — a memory to cherish, and perhaps the start of a love story she didn’t want to end.
