Chapter 13
The Challenge
Friday afternoon, Emily Harper was walking through the courtyard with Luke, discussing their plans for the weekend. The sun cast a golden glow over the school, and for a moment, Emily felt a calm, contented warmth in Luke’s presence.
But then a familiar voice called out. “Well, well… look at you two, all cozy and focused.”
Emily turned to see Chloe Matthews leaning against a tree, arms crossed and a playful smirk on her face. “Chloe…” Emily muttered, feeling a pang of guilt.
Chloe stepped closer, eyes sparkling. “Don’t get me wrong, Luke seems nice — sweet even. But I think you and I both know who really makes you… alive.”
Luke stiffened slightly, clearly annoyed. “Chloe, can we not do this right now?”
Chloe ignored him, tilting her head toward Emily. “I just thought you should know — I’m not going anywhere. And if you want to spend time with me, you better not forget it.”
Emily’s cheeks burned. She opened her mouth to respond but found herself speechless. Chloe’s presence had a way of making her feel exhilarated and nervous all at once.
Luke stepped closer to Emily, gently taking her hand. “You don’t have to answer her now,” he said quietly. “Just know that I care about you, and I’m here.”
Chloe’s grin didn’t falter. “Oh, I’ll be around,” she said teasingly, letting Emily’s hand slip from hers as she walked away.
Emily exhaled, feeling her chest tighten. She wanted both of them — Luke’s comforting presence and Chloe’s electric energy — but she couldn’t have both at the same time.
As she watched Chloe disappear around the corner, Emily realized senior year was no longer just about classes or college. It was about feelings, choices, and the messy, thrilling, impossible task of navigating a heart caught between two people she cared for deeply.
And she wasn’t sure how much longer she could keep putting it off.
