Chapter 17
A Night to Remember
Saturday night, Crestwood High hosted its annual autumn dance. The gym was decorated with twinkling fairy lights and autumn leaves, the air filled with music and laughter. Emily Harper arrived with her friends, trying to calm her racing heart.
She hadn’t expected both Luke Bennett and Chloe Matthews to ask her to dance separately — and now they were both waiting for her.
Chloe approached first, a mischievous grin on her face. “Ready to dance?” she asked, holding out her hand.
Emily hesitated, looking toward Luke, who stood a few feet away, hands in his pockets, a shy but hopeful smile on his face. Her chest ached, torn between excitement and comfort.
“I… I can’t,” Emily whispered, stepping back. “I need a minute.”
Chloe’s grin softened. “Take your time. Just… don’t forget about me.”
Luke moved closer, his presence grounding her. “Emily, it’s okay. I’m here. You don’t have to decide right now.”
The night went on, and Emily found herself pulled in both directions — Chloe twirling past her with laughter, Luke standing close with quiet encouragement. Every glance, every touch, every word intensified the storm in her heart.
Later, during a slow song, Emily was alone on the edge of the dance floor when Chloe slipped her hand into Emily’s. “Don’t overthink tonight,” Chloe whispered, her voice soft but insistent. “Just feel it.”
Moments later, Luke appeared, offering his hand. “Emily… may I?”
She looked from Chloe to Luke, feeling the weight of choice pressing on her chest. Her heart raced, torn between two people who meant more to her than she could explain.
Emily Harper realized that senior year wasn’t just about dances, grades, or college. It was about her heart, messy and tangled, and about the impossible decision she would eventually have to face.
And that night, under the twinkling lights, she felt it more than ever: love was thrilling, confusing, and utterly consuming.
