Chapter 6
Finding the Rhythm
The next afternoon, Sophie hesitated outside the music room, violin case in hand. She had spent the day thinking about Ethan — his frustration, his exhaustion, and the way she had felt a sudden emptiness without him. Maybe a little honesty could fix things.
When she stepped inside, Ethan was leaning against the piano, headphones around his neck, eyes closed as if lost in thought. He looked up when he heard her.
“Hey,” Sophie said softly.
“Hey,” he replied, voice quiet, almost unsure.
For a long moment, neither spoke. Then Sophie took a deep breath. “I… I’m sorry for walking out yesterday. I shouldn’t have let it get to me. I just… I don’t want to lose what we’re building.”
Ethan’s eyes softened, and he stepped closer. “Sophie… I’m sorry too. I overreacted. I just get nervous when I can’t control everything. But… I don’t want to lose this either.”
Sophie smiled, relief flooding her. “Then maybe we can start over?”
Ethan grinned, a hint of mischief returning. “Start over… with a little chaos?”
Sophie laughed. “Only a little.”
They set up their instruments and began to play.
This time, their music flowed effortlessly, each note a conversation, each beat a shared heartbeat.
Sophie let herself lean into Ethan’s energy, trusting him to follow her lead when she needed precision, and he let her guide him when his rhythms threatened to run wild.
During a pause, Ethan glanced at her, his expression more serious now. “You know… you’re kind of amazing, Sophie. I’ve never played with anyone who makes me feel… this way.”
Sophie felt her cheeks warm. “I feel the same. You push me… in ways I didn’t know I needed.”
A small silence fell between them, comfortable and charged. Ethan’s hand brushed against hers as he reached for a drumstick, and Sophie didn’t pull away.
For the first time, the friction, the awkwardness, and the misunderstandings felt worth it.
Their music was stronger because of the tension, the personality clash, and the trust they were slowly building — and Sophie realized that maybe, just maybe, her heart was starting to beat in rhythm with Ethan’s.
By the time they packed up, both were smiling, and Sophie left the room lighter than she had in days, her mind buzzing not with worry, but with the thrill of possibility.
Winter in Crestwood wasn’t just about snow and music anymore. It was about something new, something unexpected — and for the first time, Sophie Morgan felt ready to embrace it.
