Chapter 9
Late-Night Crescendo
It was nearly seven in the evening when Sophie arrived at the music room for another practice session. The hallway was empty, and the soft hum of the heating system made the space feel intimate and quiet.
Ethan was already there, sitting on the edge of the piano bench, drumsticks tapping an absent-minded rhythm on his knees. “You’re late,” he said teasingly, though there was a softness in his eyes that made Sophie’s heart flutter.
“I got held up,” Sophie replied, trying to sound composed. Inside, she was nervous. Tonight felt different — quieter, more charged.
They started practicing their duet, moving through the familiar sheet music, but something had shifted. Sophie found herself watching Ethan as he played, noticing the concentration in his eyes, the way his smile appeared when he hit a particularly tricky beat.
“Focus, Sophie!” Ethan called, breaking her reverie with a grin.
She laughed, cheeks warming. “I am focusing!”
As they moved into a slower passage, their music aligned perfectly, each note hanging in the air. Ethan leaned closer to adjust a rhythm, their arms brushing. Sophie’s breath caught.
“Uh… sorry,” Ethan murmured, but there was no awkwardness — just a quiet intensity that made Sophie’s heart race.
“It’s… okay,” she whispered, barely meeting his eyes.
For a moment, they just stayed there, shoulders almost touching, caught in the warmth of the room and the lingering resonance of their music.
Ethan finally broke the silence. “Sophie… I—”
She looked up, heart pounding. But before he could finish, the violin case slipped from her hand, hitting the floor with a loud thud. Both of them jumped, laughing nervously, the tension broken but the intimacy lingering.
“You’re impossible,” Sophie said breathlessly, a small smile tugging at her lips.
“You started it,” Ethan replied, grinning, but his eyes held a softness she hadn’t seen before.
As they packed up for the night, Sophie realized that her feelings for Ethan were no longer just admiration or friendship.
They were something deeper, thrilling, and terrifying all at once.
And she knew that soon, she would have to confront them — before the winter showcase, before the music, before either of them could turn back.
