Chapter 20
The Winter Showcase
The auditorium was packed, warm lights casting a golden glow over the audience. Snow swirled outside, but inside, the air buzzed with anticipation. Sophie adjusted her violin under the stage lights, taking a deep breath as Ethan set up his drums beside her.
“Ready?” he whispered, giving her a reassuring smile.
Sophie nodded, heart fluttering. “Ready.”
The spotlight hit them, and the music began. The first notes of their duet filled the room, delicate and precise, yet brimming with emotion. Each bow stroke, each drumbeat, resonated with everything they had shared — the late-night practices, snowy walks, whispered confessions, and laughter.
As the music soared, Sophie felt Ethan’s presence beside her like a tether, grounding her, inspiring her. Their eyes met mid-song, and in that glance, they communicated more than words ever could: trust, affection, and the promise of something lasting.
By the final crescendo, the audience was captivated, drawn into the intimate world Sophie and Ethan had created on stage. The last note lingered in the air, a perfect blend of precision and heart, before silence gave way to thunderous applause.
Sophie set her violin down, breathless, and turned to Ethan. He grinned, cheeks flushed, eyes shining. Without thinking, they reached for each other’s hands, fingers intertwining naturally.
“You were amazing,” Ethan said softly, leaning closer so only she could hear.
“You too,” Sophie replied, a shy smile breaking across her face.
As they took their bows, the applause still ringing, Sophie realized that the showcase had been more than a performance. It had been a declaration — of their talents, of their hard work, and most importantly, of the bond that had grown between them over the past winter.
Walking off stage together, shoulders brushing, Sophie felt a warmth that had nothing to do with the stage lights. It was the warmth of knowing that this season had given her music, snow, laughter — and the first real, undeniable love of her life.
Winter in Crestwood would always be magical, but this winter, Sophie knew, would stay with her forever.
