Chapter 4
The First Threat
The night had grown colder, and Eastbrook’s empty streets were slick with rain. Harper shivered, pulling her coat tighter as Ethan led her down a narrow alley behind the gallery.
“This way,” he murmured, checking over his shoulder. “The person we’re looking for might still be nearby.”
Harper’s heart raced — part fear, part exhilaration. Her hand brushed against Ethan’s as they moved through the shadows. She didn’t pull away. Somehow, his nearness made the danger feel… manageable, even thrilling.
A sudden noise — a metallic scrape — echoed from the alley’s far end. Harper froze. Ethan’s eyes narrowed. “Stay behind me,” he whispered.
They rounded a corner and froze. A figure stepped from the shadows, blocking their path. Tall, broad-shouldered, face hidden beneath a hood. Harper’s pulse surged, fear tightening in her chest.
“Ethan Clarke,” the figure said, voice low and menacing. “And you must be Harper Lane.”
Ethan stepped protectively in front of her. “Who are you?” he demanded.
The figure smirked, a glint of menace in the dim light. “Let’s just say I don’t like people poking into things that don’t concern them. You should leave before it gets… messy.”
Harper swallowed hard, the danger real now. But as she glanced at Ethan, his determined eyes gave her courage. “We’re not leaving,” he said firmly.
The figure hesitated, then retreated into the darkness with a warning glance. Harper exhaled shakily.
“You okay?” Ethan asked, placing a hand on her shoulder. The contact sent a jolt through her — warmth, reassurance, and something deeper she couldn’t name.
“I… think so,” Harper replied, her voice trembling. “Thanks to you.”
Ethan’s eyes softened. “I’ll always protect you. No matter what.”
For a moment, they stood close in the quiet alley, rain dripping around them, hearts pounding in unison. Danger had drawn them together, their connection growing stronger with every shadow and threat.
Harper realized something she couldn’t deny: being near Ethan in the face of fear had stirred feelings she hadn’t anticipated. It was thrilling, terrifying, and undeniable — the start of something dangerous, and deeply romantic.
