Chapter 16
A Moment of Truth
The old estate was silent, save for the soft patter of rain against broken windows. Harper’s heart raced, not only from fear, but from the electricity she felt being near Ethan. Every step they took toward the intruder felt like walking a tightrope between danger and desire.
Ethan kept close, his hand brushing hers occasionally, each touch sending warmth up her arm. “Stay behind me,” he whispered.
Harper nodded, though she wasn’t sure if she was following him or drawn instinctively to be near him.
The intruder, groaning from the earlier struggle, suddenly pulled a small, hidden knife from his coat. Harper froze. Ethan’s eyes darkened as he stepped between her and the threat. “You’re not touching her,” he growled.
The intruder lunged. In a flurry of movement, Ethan disarmed him, the knife clattering to the floor. Harper rushed forward, grabbing the painting to secure it, but tripped slightly. Ethan’s arms caught her instantly, pressing her against his chest.
For a heartbeat, the world seemed to stop. Harper’s breath hitched. Ethan’s face was inches from hers, his dark eyes locked on hers with an intensity that made her pulse spike.
“You okay?” he murmured, his thumb brushing along her jawline, gentle and reassuring.
Harper nodded, her lips trembling. “I… yes,” she whispered, barely able to meet his gaze.
Ethan leaned closer, his lips so close she could feel his warmth. “Harper…”
The rain outside seemed to fade, the shadows in the room disappearing.
Harper tilted her head instinctively, her heartbeat thundering in her ears.
And then, finally, their lips met — tentative at first, a soft, urgent connection that melted the tension of the night into something electric, tender, and overwhelming.
When they pulled back slightly, breaths mingling, Harper laughed softly, exhilarated. “That… was worth all the danger,” she whispered.
Ethan smiled, resting his forehead against hers. “Every second with you is worth it,” he said.
Outside, the storm continued, but inside, amidst danger and adrenaline, Harper realized two things: the mystery had brought them together, and nothing — not fear, not shadows, not threats — could dim the spark that had finally ignited between them.
