Chapter 18

Aftermath and Secrets

The morning sun shone over Eastbrook, but Harper and Ethan still felt the lingering tension from the night before. The streets seemed calm, almost peaceful — a stark contrast to the chaos of the warehouse and the estate. Yet they both knew the intruder’s reach might not be entirely gone.

Ethan led Harper to a quiet café, a safe spot where they could regroup.

As they sat, sipping steaming cups of coffee, their hands found each other again, fingers interlacing naturally.

The warmth of their touch reminded Harper that, despite the danger, there was comfort — and something more — in being near him.

“We did it,” Harper said softly, glancing down at the recovered painting. “The intruder won’t be able to use it now.”

Ethan smiled, eyes softening. “We make a good team,” he said. “But there’s still something I want you to know.”

Harper looked up, curious. “What is it?”

Ethan leaned closer, voice low and intimate. “I don’t just care about keeping you safe,” he admitted. “I care about you… about us. This… whatever we have… it’s real, Harper. And I don’t want to lose it.”

Harper’s breath caught. She felt the same pull, the same undeniable attraction, but hearing him voice it made her heart swell. “Ethan… I feel the same way,” she whispered, her thumb brushing along his hand.

For a moment, the world outside the café vanished. The suspense, the danger, the intruder — all of it faded, leaving only the quiet certainty of their connection. Harper leaned closer, and Ethan mirrored her, their foreheads touching, breaths mingling.

But as they lingered in the warmth of the moment, Harper’s phone buzzed. She glanced down, and her stomach twisted. A message flashed on the screen:

“You’re not done yet. I’m watching.”

Harper’s hand trembled slightly as she showed Ethan the message. His expression hardened, protective. “Looks like our night isn’t over,” he said grimly, though his hand still found hers.

Harper swallowed, feeling a mix of fear and excitement. Danger was still out there, but so was their bond — stronger now, unshakable. And for the first time, she realized that facing it together made the suspense almost… thrilling.

Ethan’s eyes met hers, full of intensity and promise. “Whatever comes next,” he said, voice low, “we face it together. No matter what.”

Harper nodded, feeling her pulse quicken — not from fear alone, but from the undeniable knowledge that they were in this together, heart and soul.
