Chapter 1
Winter at Willow Lake
Arrival at Willow Lake
Emily Carter pulled her suitcase through the snow-dusted streets of Willow Lake, her breath forming little clouds in the crisp winter air. The town was quiet, almost perfectly still, with the soft glow of fairy lights strung across shop windows and rooftops.
She had promised herself this trip would be different — no deadlines, no work emails, no city noise. Just a cozy cabin, a roaring fireplace, and a chance to finally breathe.
As Emily approached the small inn where she would be staying, she collided with someone rushing in the opposite direction, almost knocking her over.
“I’m so sorry!” Emily exclaimed, steadying herself.
“No, my fault entirely,” said a deep, warm voice. She looked up into the kind eyes of a man with tousled dark hair and a friendly smile.
“I’m Jack,” he said, offering a hand. “Jack Harrison. You must be the guest staying at the Willow Inn?”
Emily hesitated, then shook his hand. “Emily Carter. And yes, I’m… that guest.” She smiled, feeling an unexpected flutter in her chest at his easy charm.
Jack chuckled. “Well, welcome to Willow Lake, Emily. Let me help you with your luggage — it looks heavy.”
As they stepped inside the inn, the warmth of the fireplace hit her, chasing away the chill. Emily couldn’t help but notice Jack’s attentive nature, the way he moved around the inn with familiarity and care. Something about him felt… comforting.
“Your room is just up the stairs,” Jack said, handing her the key. “If you need anything, just let me know. And trust me, the view from the balcony is worth it — especially with the lake frozen over this time of year.”
Emily smiled, feeling a spark of excitement she hadn’t expected. Maybe this quiet winter getaway would be exactly what she needed… and maybe, just maybe, Jack Harrison would make it unforgettable.
