Chapter 4

Ice and Laughter

The frozen lake sparkled under a clear winter sky, the surface smooth and glistening. Emily pulled her scarf tighter and watched Jack lace up his skates with practiced ease.

“You’ve skated before?” she asked, raising an eyebrow.

Jack grinned. “A little. You?”

Emily shook her head. “Not since I was a kid. I’m warning you — I’m probably terrible.”

“Perfect,” Jack said, offering his hand. “Then I can help you.”

Hesitant but excited, Emily stepped onto the ice. Her first wobble made her grip Jack’s hand tightly, and he steadied her with a reassuring smile. “There you go,” he said. “Just relax and trust me.”

For the next hour, they glided across the lake, laughter echoing in the crisp air. Emily fell a few times, each tumble followed by Jack’s steadying hand and a teasing comment that made her laugh even harder.

“You’re a natural at this,” Jack teased after helping her back up once more.

Emily rolled her eyes, smiling. “I’m just being graceful… eventually.”

Jack laughed, his eyes sparkling in the winter sunlight. “You’re perfect,” he said softly, his voice carrying more warmth than the sun itself. Emily’s cheeks flushed, and she looked down, embarrassed but thrilled.

After skating for a while, they sat on a bench by the lake, sipping cocoa from a thermos Jack had brought. The quiet between them was comfortable, filled with the soft sounds of the lake and distant laughter of other winter visitors.

“I’m really glad I came here,” Emily said, leaning slightly toward him. “I didn’t expect… any of this.”

“Any of what?” Jack asked, his voice gentle.

“This,” Emily said, gesturing between them. “This laughter, this… connection. I feel… at home here.”

Jack’s hand brushed hers again, fingers intertwining naturally. “I’m glad you’re here too,” he admitted. “And I have a feeling Willow Lake has a way of surprising people.”

Emily’s heart fluttered. The winter sun reflected in the ice, making the lake shimmer like magic. And for the first time in a long while, Emily felt that magic wasn’t just in the scenery — it was in Jack Harrison, sitting next to her, hand in hand, making her winter getaway unforgettable.
