Chapter 4

Ice Cream and Embarrassment

The next weekend, Ethan suggested a casual outing. “How about ice cream?” he asked, looking uncharacteristically hopeful.

Samantha raised an eyebrow. “You’re confident this won’t end in disaster?”

Samantha laughed. “I’ll take that risk.”

They arrived at the quirky little ice cream shop downtown, the smell of waffle cones filling the air. Samantha ordered a strawberry scoop, Ethan went for pistachio, and they grabbed a small table outside.

“So,” Samantha said, twirling her spoon, “what made you want to go on a muffin-date follow-up with ice cream?”

Ethan shrugged. “I figured if muffins ended in a minor disaster, maybe ice cream would be safer.”

Samantha snorted. “You’re fearless.”

“Or wildly optimistic,” he admitted, grinning.

Everything was going smoothly—until a seagull swooped down and snatched a bite of Samantha’s ice cream right off her cone. She screamed, flailing, and Ethan jumped to shoo the bird away, accidentally flinging a bit of his pistachio onto her shoulder.

“Oh no,” Samantha said, laughing despite herself. “You and I… we can’t do anything without chaos.”

Ethan grinned sheepishly. “Maybe chaos is our thing.”

They spent the next few minutes laughing uncontrollably, wiping ice cream off each other and dodging the increasingly daring seagull. By the time they finally settled back at the table, sticky and laughing, they were both breathless.

“You know,” Ethan said, brushing a hand over her sticky shoulder, “I’ve never had a date like this.”

“Neither have I,” Samantha admitted, grinning. “It’s… perfect. Somehow.”

Ethan smiled, leaning across the table. “Good. Because I think we should embrace the chaos. You and me, team disaster.”

Samantha laughed, her heart warming. “Team disaster… I like the sound of that.”

And as they shared a quiet moment, laughing at their own mess, Samantha realized something: maybe falling for Ethan meant falling into beautiful, hilarious chaos—and she wouldn’t have it any other way.
