Chapter 9
Playful Notes
The café was quieter than usual that morning, the soft hum of the espresso machine providing the perfect soundtrack to a lazy start. Emma arranged pastries with a thoughtful expression, humming along to the faint music playing from the speakers.
“Morning, Emma,” Ethan said, sliding into the café with a grin that made her heart skip a beat. “Ready for today’s performance?”
Emma raised an eyebrow. “You call playing the same song three times a performance?”
“Every performance deserves its own drama,” he teased, plopping down onto the stool near the counter. “Besides, I’ve got something new for you today.”
Emma felt a thrill of curiosity as Ethan pulled a small harmonica from his pocket. “Oh no,” she said with mock horror. “You’re going to add that to the chaos?”
“Exactly,” he replied with a wink. “Chaos with charm.”
As Ethan played, Emma found herself smiling uncontrollably. His playful energy was infectious, and she realized how much she looked forward to his presence every day. When he finished, she clapped softly. “Not bad… for chaos.”
“Not bad?” he echoed, mock indignation in his tone. “I expected a standing ovation from my favorite barista.”
Emma laughed, shaking her head. “You’ll have to earn that.”
Ethan leaned closer, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. “Maybe I already have.”
Emma’s cheeks flushed. “Maybe you have what?”
“The right to make you smile like that,” he murmured, letting his gaze linger on her.
For a moment, the café seemed to disappear around them. Their playful teasing carried an undercurrent of something more, something neither of them wanted to rush but couldn’t ignore.
Emma shook herself slightly, breaking the spell. “Alright, musician, get back to work before the customers arrive,” she said, trying to sound stern but failing miserably.
Ethan stood, offering a hand with a grin. “As you wish, barista. But just so you know… I plan to charm you every day until you admit it’s working.”
Emma rolled her eyes, laughing, but inside her heart was dancing to the rhythm of his words, his music, and the undeniable chemistry between them.
