Chapter 17

Snowbound Stories

The sky had darkened early, and a fresh snowstorm swept over Willow Creek. Emma was closing The Page Turner when she noticed Lucas standing outside, bundled in his coat and scarf.

“Looks like we’re snowbound,” he said with a grin. “Want to stay in together?”

Emma laughed, brushing snow off her coat. “I’d love that. Lead the way.”

They trudged back to Lucas’s apartment, snow crunching beneath their boots, and stepped inside to warmth and the scent of pine from a small decorative tree he had set up.

“Perfect for a snowstorm,” Lucas said, offering Emma a cup of steaming cocoa.

They curled up on the couch under a thick blanket, the storm outside muffling the usual sounds of the town. Emma rested her head on his shoulder, feeling the warmth and comfort of being close.

“I realized something,” Lucas began softly, his breath warm against her hair. “I don’t just like our adventures. I like the quiet moments too… like this. Just being with you, talking, or even not talking.”

Emma smiled, lifting her head to look at him. “I feel the same. It’s nice… to slow down and just… be together.”

They shared stories from their childhoods, laughing at funny memories and pausing for the tender ones. Lucas spoke of small victories on the ice rink, Emma told him about her favorite books as a child, and soon, they were sharing little secrets they hadn’t told anyone else.

“Lucas…” Emma said, her voice soft, “I’m really happy. With you.”

He smiled, brushing a strand of hair from her face. “Me too, Emma. You’ve made this winter… the best one I’ve ever had.”

Outside, the storm raged, but inside, time seemed to stand still. Wrapped in a blanket, sipping cocoa, and sharing laughter and stories, Emma and Lucas realized that love wasn’t only in grand gestures—it was in the quiet, safe moments that built trust, comfort, and intimacy.

As the night grew darker, they fell into a comfortable silence, hearts close and steady, knowing that whatever storms came—inside or out—they would face them together.
