Chapter 5

Picnic Pandemonium

It was the perfect summer morning for a picnic.

Clara packed a wicker basket with sandwiches, fruit, and a few pastries she had baked herself, while Liam brought a blanket and a bottle of lemonade.

They headed to Willow Creek’s lakeside park, the sun sparkling off the water and the trees swaying gently in the breeze.

“This is perfect,” Clara said, laying out the blanket. “Nothing fancy, just us, food, and the lake.”

Liam grinned. “Exactly. And maybe a little trouble.”

Almost immediately, that “little trouble” arrived in the form of a curious squirrel. As Liam opened the lemonade, the squirrel darted forward, knocking over the bottle and sending the drink spilling across the blanket.

“Hey!” Liam exclaimed, laughing as he tried to shoo it away.

Clara giggled uncontrollably. “I told you—trouble finds you!”

They spent the next few minutes chasing the mischievous squirrel away, laughing so hard that their faces hurt. Eventually, they sat down again, sticky lemonade forgotten, and shared sandwiches while wiping tears of laughter from their eyes.

After lunch, Liam suggested a game of tossing a frisbee. Clara, competitive as ever, challenged him to a match. They ran across the grassy field, tripping over each other, tumbling into the grass, and laughing until they could barely catch their breath.

“You’re impossible!” Clara gasped, laughing, as Liam sprawled on the ground, pretending to be exhausted.

“And yet, you love it,” he replied, smirking.

Clara shook her head, smiling. “Maybe. Just a little.”

As the afternoon sun dipped lower, they lay on the blanket, side by side, watching the clouds drift across the sky. Liam brushed a stray hair from Clara’s face, his fingers lingering against her cheek.

“You know,” he murmured, “I could spend all summer like this. Just… laughing, running, and being with you.”

Clara’s heart swelled. “I’d like that too, Liam. I really would.”

They watched the lake shimmer in the golden light, knowing that the summer was young and full of possibilities—adventures, laughter, and perhaps, the beginning of a love that could bloom as brightly as the season itself.
