Chapter 7

The Lakeboat Misadventure

The sun was high and warm when Clara suggested a rowboat ride on Willow Creek Lake. Liam eagerly agreed, claiming he was a “professional rower,” though Clara was skeptical.

They pushed the small wooden boat into the water and climbed in, Liam at the oars. “Watch and learn,” he said confidently, taking the oars with exaggerated pride.

Moments later, the boat wobbled dangerously, sending Clara into a fit of giggles. “Professional rower? Really?”

“I said watch and learn!” he called back, though the boat swayed again and narrowly avoided the reeds along the shore.

Halfway across the lake, a sudden wave splashed over the side, soaking both of them. Clara shrieked, then dissolved into laughter. Liam laughed too, his green eyes sparkling. “I told you… adventure awaits!”

“You mean… soaking wet adventure!” she countered, flicking water at him playfully.

They paddled clumsily back toward the dock, slipping and sliding, nearly toppling the boat more than once. By the time they reached shore, they were drenched but laughing uncontrollably, leaning against each other for support.

“Next time,” Clara gasped between giggles, “we are wearing life jackets and waterproof clothes.”

Liam grinned, pulling her into a quick, dripping kiss. “Next time, I’ll be more… professional.”

Clara shook her head, laughing again. “I doubt that. But I’ll take the fun and chaos with you any day.”

As they walked back toward town, dripping and shivering slightly, Clara realized that summer with Liam was unpredictable, messy, and utterly perfect. Every laugh, every splash, and every playful argument drew them closer—making her heart bloom in ways she hadn’t expected.
