Chapter 9

The Ice Cream Challenge

The next afternoon, the heat was almost unbearable, and Clara suggested stopping at Sweet Treats, the town’s famous ice cream parlor. Liam raised an eyebrow.

“You know this means war, right?” he said, smirking.

Clara laughed. “War? It’s just ice cream.”

“Just ice cream?” he repeated, mock-serious. “Clara Bennett, prepare to lose.”

They each picked a towering sundae, piled high with scoops, sauces, and whipped cream. Sitting on the curb outside the shop, the challenge began: who could finish their sundae first without giving up.

Liam’s competitive streak kicked in immediately, his tongue moving faster than Clara had ever seen. She, however, was determined not to be beaten. As they laughed, scoops of ice cream dripped down their fingers and onto the sidewalk.

Halfway through, Liam’s sundae tipped slightly. Clara couldn’t resist teasing. “Oh no! Looks like you’re losing, Mr. Professional Rowing Champion.”

“I… can recover!” he insisted, trying to scoop quickly but only making a bigger mess.

By the end, neither of them had truly won. Ice cream covered their hands, faces, and even a little on their clothes. They collapsed against each other, laughing so hard passersby smiled at their antics.

“You’re impossible,” Clara said breathlessly, wiping a smudge of chocolate from his cheek.

“And yet,” Liam replied, brushing a smear from her lips with his thumb, “you love me anyway.”

Clara rolled her eyes but smiled. “Maybe. Just a little.”

As they walked back toward the park, sticky fingers entwined, Clara realized that these small, chaotic moments were what made summer with Liam unforgettable. Between laughter, playful competition, and tender touches, their bond was growing stronger—and it was sweeter than any sundae in town.
