Chapter 7

Rainy Afternoon Comforts

The city woke to a soft drizzle that Saturday, streets glistening with reflections of streetlights and umbrellas. Lila had intended to spend the morning in her apartment, reading and writing, but her phone buzzed with a message from Ethan:

“Rainy day. Want to grab coffee and hide from the world with me?”

She smiled, typing back a quick yes, and within half an hour, they were walking through puddled streets together, sharing a single umbrella.

They ducked into a small, cozy café, the kind with mismatched chairs and shelves of books lining the walls. The scent of fresh pastries and coffee filled the air. Ethan gestured to a corner table near the window, and they settled in, dripping water onto napkins, laughing at the soggy mess.

“Why do rainy days feel so… honest?” Ethan asked, stirring his cappuccino.

Lila raised an eyebrow. “Honest?”

“You know… like the world slows down just enough for you to notice what really matters,” he said softly, eyes meeting hers.

She felt a flutter in her chest. “I think I know what you mean.”

For the next hour, they talked quietly, laughter punctuating soft pauses.

Ethan shared stories of his childhood, the small adventures he had in the countryside, the sketches he had hidden away in notebooks.

Lila shared hers—funny mishaps from reporting, dreams she hadn’t told anyone, fears she usually kept tucked away.

At one point, Ethan reached across the table, brushing a damp strand of hair from her face. “You always listen,” he said. “Really listen. It’s… rare.”

Lila felt warmth flood through her. “And you always notice,” she said softly. “Even little things I don’t say out loud.”

Outside, the rain intensified, drumming softly against the window. Inside, the world narrowed to their quiet corner, the slow rhythm of conversation, shared glances, and the comfort of being together.

As they left the café later, umbrellas in hand, Lila realized that the slow burn she had felt all along wasn’t just growing—it was glowing, steady and intimate, a warmth she wanted to follow wherever it led.

And with Ethan by her side, she felt certain of one thing: some connections didn’t need to rush. They simply needed time, patience, and the quiet courage to let themselves grow.
