Chapter 20

First Confession

The late afternoon sun bathed Ashwood in a soft golden glow as Clara walked to the fountain, sketchbook tucked under her arm. She felt a flutter of anticipation—Leo had asked to meet her there, and the way he phrased it had her heart racing.

Leo was already there, leaning casually against the stone edge of the fountain. When he saw her, his smile widened, warm and familiar.

“Hey,” he said softly.

“Hey,” Clara replied, feeling the nerves settle into a sweet tension.

They walked slowly, side by side, neither rushing, savoring the quiet intimacy of the moment.

Finally, Leo stopped and turned to face her. “Clara… there’s something I’ve been meaning to say,” he began, his voice low and sincere.

Clara’s heart thumped. “Yes?” she prompted, her hands clutching the edges of her coat.

He took a deep breath. “I’ve tried to be patient, tried to let this—us—grow slowly… but I can’t keep it inside any longer. I… I love you, Clara. I have for a long time, in every quiet moment we’ve shared, every laugh, every glance, every small touch. I love you.”

Clara felt her chest tighten, tears welling in her eyes. She had been waiting, in her own slow way, for this moment. “Leo… I love you too,” she whispered, her voice trembling with relief and joy.

He reached for her hand, holding it gently, reverently, as if it were the most precious thing in the world. “Then we can take this one step at a time,” he said, a small, hopeful smile on his lips.

Clara nodded, leaning slightly closer. “One step at a time,” she agreed.

They stood there, hands entwined, hearts full, as the sun dipped lower and the first stars appeared in the sky. The slow-burn of their love had finally ignited into something tangible, a quiet, enduring flame.

And for Clara and Leo, the world seemed perfect in that moment—not because anything grand had happened, but because every small, deliberate step of their journey had led them here, together.
