Chapter 2
Snowy Encounters
Emma hadn’t expected to see Luke again, but life—or perhaps fate—had a way of surprising her.
The next morning, she bundled herself in her coat and scarf, heading to her favorite coffee shop to warm up before drawing. As she pushed open the door, the bell jingled, and there he was: Luke, standing in line, a cup of coffee in his hand, looking equally surprised.
“Emma?” he said, his eyes lighting up. “Wow… fancy meeting you here.”
Emma smiled, feeling her cheeks warm. “I could say the same. Seems like Ashford isn’t big enough to avoid collisions.”
Luke laughed, the same warm sound from the day before. “Or maybe we’re just meant to bump into each other.”
They shared a table, sipping their drinks as snow continued to fall outside. Luke talked about his work at a local bookstore, the stories he loved, and the little joys of life in Ashford. Emma listened, captivated—not just by his words, but by the ease with which he made her feel comfortable.
At one point, she showed him a sketch she had started the day before, a snowy street scene with two figures meeting unexpectedly.
“That’s… us?” Luke asked, eyes widening slightly.
Emma shrugged, smiling softly. “I think it could be. Maybe it’s the start of a story.”
Luke looked at her, that spark from the first meeting flickering again in his gaze. “Then I hope this story has many chapters,” he said quietly.
As Emma left the café, sketchbook clutched to her chest, she couldn’t help but feel that something special had begun—a connection gentle, unexpected, and full of promise.
