Chapter 20

Winter’s Embrace

The first morning of the new year dawned crisp and bright. Snow still blanketed Ashford, sparkling in the early sunlight. Emma stepped outside, her breath fogging in the cold air, and spotted Luke waiting by the gate, holding a small box wrapped in a simple ribbon.

“Morning,” he said, his grin warming even the icy air between them.

“Morning,” Emma replied, heart fluttering. “What’s this?”

Luke handed her the box. “A little something to remember this winter by. Open it.”

Inside was a delicate charm bracelet, each charm representing a moment they had shared: a snowflake for their riverside skate, a tiny book for their café afternoons, a lantern for the festival lights, and a heart for… well, everything.

Emma’s eyes welled up. “Luke… it’s beautiful. Every piece… it’s us.”

He took her hand gently. “Emma, this winter, this year… I realized that life is better with you in it. Slow, steady, real. You make everything brighter.”

Emma smiled, feeling the warmth of his words settle deep inside her. “I feel the same. You’ve made me believe in small joys, in steady love… and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”

They leaned in, and this time, the kiss was slow, certain, and full of promise. When they pulled back, their foreheads rested together, eyes shining with the quiet joy of shared hearts.

“Happy New Year, Emma,” Luke whispered.

“Happy New Year, Luke,” she replied, squeezing his hand.

As they walked through the snow-blanketed streets, hand in hand, the world felt endless and full of possibility. The winter had brought them together slowly, patiently, but it had given them something lasting: love that was gentle, steadfast, and entirely their own.

And in that serene winter embrace, Emma and Luke knew that this was only the beginning.
