Chapter 1

Sunset Letters

A Chance Encounter

Hannah Ellis was used to the quiet rhythm of her seaside town. The smell of salt and the sound of waves had been constants in her life, comforting and unchanging. But today, as she walked along the boardwalk, her sketchbook clutched under her arm, something unusual caught her attention.

A man was struggling to untangle a kite in the breeze, his tall frame awkward against the gusting wind. Papers fluttered from his satchel, and he cursed under his breath.

“Need a hand?” Hannah asked, approaching cautiously.

He looked up, startled, and then smiled sheepishly. “I could use one. Thanks.”

Together, they wrestled with the kite, laughter rising over the wind as they finally got it airborne.

“I’m Hannah,” she said, brushing a strand of hair from her face.

“Ethan,” he replied, extending a hand. His eyes were warm, but there was a hint of something restless behind them.

For a few fleeting moments, the world seemed to pause. The kite danced in the sky, the ocean whispered at their feet, and an unspoken curiosity sparked between them.

“Do you come here often?” Hannah asked, feeling a blush creep up.

“Not really,” Ethan admitted. “I just… needed to get away for a bit. Work, life—it’s been… hectic.”

Hannah nodded, understanding more than he could know. “Sometimes, the sea is the best escape.”

They stood in companionable silence, watching the kite dip and rise against the fading light.

Neither of them realized that this small encounter would become the beginning of something neither expected—a story written not in words, but in moments, glances, and the letters they would soon start leaving for each other along the boardwalk.
