Chapter 3
The First Letter
That evening, Hannah returned to the boardwalk with her sketchbook. She found a quiet spot beneath the old lamppost, where the glow barely touched the sand. Carefully, she tore a page from her notebook and wrote:
“Dear Stranger,
I’m not sure if you’ll read this, but I thought I’d try. Thank you for the laughter yesterday—it was unexpected, and the kite owes you as much as I do.
If you ever want to continue our little secret, I’ll be here tomorrow.
–Hannah”
She folded the note and tucked it behind the base of the lamppost, hoping it would remain unnoticed by others but found by Ethan.
The next morning, Hannah returned, heart fluttering. The note was gone.
Moments later, Ethan appeared, holding a small piece of paper in his hand. “I think this belongs to you,” he said, smiling. He handed her a folded note of his own.
“Dear Hannah,
I found your note. You have a clever way with words. I’d like to keep this secret too. Maybe tomorrow, we can exchange another?
–Ethan”
Hannah read the note twice, a smile spreading across her face. “Tomorrow, then,” she whispered, tucking it safely into her sketchbook.
And just like that, a new kind of connection began—one built on letters, secrecy, and the thrill of discovery.
Neither of them realized that these small exchanges would slowly unravel the walls they had built around their hearts, until one day, the letters weren’t enough—they would have to face the feelings blooming in real life.
