Chapter 10

The Lighthouse Game

The boardwalk had become their shared sanctuary, a place where letters, laughter, and quiet confessions intertwined. One evening, Hannah arrived to find Ethan waiting with a mischievous grin.

“I’ve got an idea,” he said, twirling a piece of string between his fingers. “A game.”

Hannah raised an eyebrow. “A game?”

“Yep. A little treasure hunt. I’ve hidden a note somewhere along the boardwalk. Clues will lead you to it.”

Her eyes lit up. “You’re ridiculous.”

“Maybe,” he admitted, “but fun ridiculous. Are you in?”

With a laugh, Hannah accepted. Ethan handed her the first clue—a small paper folded neatly:

“Where the waves kiss the sand, your next hint waits at the bend.”

She ran along the shore, laughing as she discovered each clue, the game leading her closer to him, closer to the shared thrill that made her heart race. When she finally reached the bend of the boardwalk, she found Ethan waiting, holding the final note.

“Got it?” he asked, his smile wide and teasing.

Hannah held up the note triumphantly. “I win.”

Ethan shook his head. “No, we both win. Because look.” He pointed to the message on the final note:

“We make a great team. And maybe… the best adventures are the ones we share. –E”

Hannah’s cheeks warmed. “You’re impossible.”

“And yet,” he said softly, “you keep coming back.”

Their eyes met, lingering a moment longer than necessary. The air between them was charged, playful, and tender all at once. For the first time, the game wasn’t just a distraction—it was a reflection of the connection that had quietly blossomed between them.

The sunset painted the sky with oranges and pinks as they sat on the bench, shoulders brushing. Neither needed to speak. The laughter, the teasing, the shared thrill of the hunt—it all said what words had yet to fully express.

Hannah realized that every moment with Ethan, every letter, every secret game, was building something more. Something worth taking slowly, savoring, and holding close.
