Chapter 19
Midnight Walks
The night was quiet, the sky painted in deep shades of navy and scattered silver stars. Ethan had insisted on taking Hannah for a walk along the pier, just the two of them, away from the usual bustle of the boardwalk.
“Why so late?” Hannah asked, pulling her jacket tighter around her.
“Because the night has its own magic,” Ethan said, a teasing grin on his face. “And I wanted to show it to you.”
They walked side by side, their hands brushing occasionally, sending small sparks up Hannah’s arm. The water below glimmered with reflections of distant lights, and the wind carried a gentle, salty scent.
“I’ve never noticed how peaceful it is here at night,” Hannah admitted.
“That’s because you’re usually too distracted by my terrible jokes,” Ethan replied, nudging her playfully.
Hannah laughed, her eyes meeting his. “Terrible, yes. But somehow charming.”
They reached the far end of the pier, where the wooden planks stretched over the dark water. Ethan stopped, turning to face her. “Hannah… I’ve been meaning to tell you something.”
Her heart skipped. “What is it?”
He took a deep breath, his gaze steady. “I don’t want to rush us. But… I think about you all the time. Every sketch, every letter, every laugh we share… it matters to me more than I expected. More than I can even put into words.”
Hannah felt her chest tighten, emotions swirling. “I feel the same, Ethan. Every moment… it’s like it’s been leading to this, slowly, but surely.”
He reached for her hand, intertwining their fingers. “Then let’s promise to keep this… slow, but honest. Every step, together.”
Hannah smiled, warmth spreading through her. “Together,” she echoed.
For a long moment, they stood there, hands clasped, the quiet waves beneath them echoing the rhythm of their hearts.
The slow burn of their love had grown into something tangible now, a steady flame that promised more—more laughter, more sketches, more shared secrets, and perhaps, the first real steps toward a future together.
