Chapter 1

Falling Notes

First Notes

Clara Bennett had never imagined that moving to the small town of Willowbrook would change her life so drastically. A city girl through and through, she found the quiet streets and rustling autumn leaves almost unbearably peaceful.

Her first day at the Willowbrook Music Academy was nerve-wracking. She clutched her violin case tightly, navigating the hallways crowded with students who seemed to know everyone except her.

Then she heard it—a deep, resonant cello note that made her pause. She turned the corner and saw a boy, leaning over a cello, his dark hair falling into his eyes as he played. The music wrapped around her like a warm blanket, making her forget the nervous flutter in her chest.

He looked up, catching her staring. His gaze was intense, curious, and for a moment, Clara felt as though he could see right into her thoughts.

“Hi,” she said, feeling oddly shy. “I’m Clara. I’m new here.”

He smiled faintly, closing the cello case. “I’m Liam. Welcome to Willowbrook. Don’t worry—you’ll fit in.”

Clara returned the smile, though her stomach still twisted with nerves. “I hope so.”

“You play the violin?” Liam asked, gesturing to her case.

“Yes,” she replied. “Though I haven’t played in a while.”

“Well,” he said, tilting his head, “maybe we can play together sometime. I think the cello and violin sound pretty amazing together.”

Clara’s heart skipped. “I’d like that.”

And just like that, a quiet spark was lit. Between shy smiles and the first shared notes of music, Clara sensed that Willowbrook—and this boy with the cello—might change her world in ways she hadn’t expected.
