Chapter 8

Notes of Rivalry

The academy’s practice hall was buzzing with students preparing for the upcoming recital. Clara entered, violin case in hand, only to see another student—Evan, a confident pianist—already seated at the grand piano.

“Clara! Liam!” he called, flashing a competitive grin. “Ready to show us how it’s done?”

Clara felt a flicker of nerves. She had noticed Evan’s skill before, and his presence made her palms sweat. Liam, however, looked calm, adjusting his cello.

“Of course,” Liam said with a small smile. “Competition or not, we just play our best.”

They began their duet, notes flowing smoothly, but Evan’s presence seemed to push them. His practiced, confident air added a subtle tension to their music, making every note count.

During a brief pause, Clara whispered, “He’s… intimidating.”

Liam leaned closer, his voice gentle. “Focus on us, not him. We’ve got something he doesn’t—a connection that goes beyond notes.”

Clara’s heart thudded. She realized he was right. It wasn’t about impressing anyone else; it was about their music together.

As they resumed, their melodies intertwined perfectly, each correcting the other, teasing and supporting, their trust growing with every measure. By the end, even Evan had to nod in approval, impressed by their chemistry.

After practice, Liam brushed a loose strand of hair from Clara’s face. “See? Nothing to worry about. We’re better together.”

Clara smiled, warmth spreading through her chest. “Yeah… together.”

Even in the midst of rivalry, the slow burn between them deepened, each shared note, glance, and smile quietly building a bond neither could deny.
