Dave approaches Nikki and I, handing our beers to us. The hotel bar is abuzz with a few teams squished together, taking over the area. Everyone is in high spirits after the end of the season and Riley winning the championship.
“What’s your mum been up to?” Nikki asks. “We really need to pop by and say hello, it’s been too long!”
“She’s been good. She’s asked when you both will be free to come over for dinner,” I reply.
“We would love that!” Nikki exclaims with a brilliant smile.
“Yeah, your mum is hilarious,” Dave states.
My phone buzzes on the table and my eyes catch Perry’s name on the screen.
Couldn’t say this in person, but I can’t continue with our relationship. Our schedules don’t match up and it’s a struggle to coordinate our times. I need someone who can follow my schedule. Sorry if you feel blindsided by this, but I have been thinking about it for a while now.
What did I just read?
It must be written all over my face because both Nikki and Dave are looking at me, asking if everything is okay. I flip my phone over to the both of them and show them that Perry has dumped me via text. They exchange a look between the two of them, and Nikki shuffles over to hug me.
“I’m…I better go,” I say, standing up with Nikki following. “I’m okay. I want to go to my hotel room and see if…if I can call him.” Why would I want to bother calling him? I don’t. I just want to be alone.
I register enough of the call me and let me know if you need anything from Nikki, followed by another hug.
The elevator is close. I don’t have to go too far, and then I can be in my hotel room to scream or cry. I’ll decide which one I go with when I am up there. I just have to keep it together from here to the elevator.
