Epilogue
ZEUS
"So, Granger and Solomon are both dead," I concluded.
Hypnos looked over at me and sipped his whiskey. "They haven't found Granger."
I scoffed. "He's been missing for weeks. Solomon is dead. His body left as a message to us."
To me.
"What are we going to do about it?" he asked. "Solomon wasn't forthcoming with whatever he was working on. We should have insisted."
Did he dare to criticize me?
If he wasn't lucky, he'd be the next one to die. This time by my hand.
But I wouldn't kill him, not yet. He was useful. If I worked this carefully, they'd go after him before me. I'd catch them that way. And if he died in the process?
Better him than me.
"We need to be on guard," I said slowly. "But not let them stop us from operating as usual. If we go to ground now, people will notice." Me more than him, worse luck.
If there was an inconvenience to being powerful and influential, it was that you had to maintain a public facade. One that was very different from reality.
Of course.
"I'm not concerned," Hypnos said, arrogant as always. One of these days, his arrogance was going to be his downfall. "Granger and Solomon were always sloppy. A word I would not use to describe myself." He gave me a half-lidded glance like perhaps I fit that description.
"Be careful you don't overstep," I warned. He was coming closer to thin ice.
"I wouldn't dream of it," he said, as if he wouldn't kill me to save himself. He'd done worse than killing people and he hadn't broken a sweat.
Of course, it was easier to manipulate and kill people when they were out cold.
He didn't call himself Hypnos for nothing.
