Epilogue
ZEUS
"Boss, it would seem Granger Fairfield is dead," Thomas remarked.
"Of course he is," I said with a grunt. Why did I surround myself with toadies like him? Yes men and their Captain Obvious routine.
I rewound the footage and watched it again.
Fairfield stood inside his own property, the one he used when he visited New York. In his hand, he held a gun, pointed at two figures covered from head to toe in black. One looked female, but I couldn't be sure. They were speaking, but no sound accompanied the video.
Exactly as it happened the last handful of times I watched it, the back door opened and a man stepped through. The camera only caught a glimpse of his face before he plunged something into Fairfield's neck. Some kind of drug.
More talking, then Fairfield was falling to his knees before they picked him up and carried him out.
Further on in the video, approximately fifteen minutes later, another figure stepped down the corridor, this one also covered in black, a mask over his face. He leaned over to scoop something up off the floor.
Fairfield's phone. That could be problematic, depending on what they were after. This could be related to his other business dealings.
I suspected not.
Whoever they were, they were coming after us.
After me.
I rewound the video again, this time stopping on the one, grainy face. I took a screenshot and sent it off to one of my people.
When we found him, we'd find the rest of them. And we would.
I'd get to them before they got to me.
