HEAVEN SENT

I told myself I ’ d never set foot anywhere near my father ’ s
vicinity again, but my soft spot for my mother won the argument
after she begged me to come home for dinner. A part of me believes
my father connived her into begging. He knew I wouldn’t listen to
him. I may have agreed to this dinner, but only with demands in
place: no electronics, no work, no fighting, just a normal family
dinner. That was asking too much, considering Nico showed up.
After Nico left, I waited for my father to come back
downstairs for hours, but he never did. He stayed up in his office all
evening. I wanted a simple dinner, just one in my whole eighteen
years. I understand that there was an emergency to take care of, but
why does it have to take the whole night? My mother remained in
the kitchen the entire time, and I think I heard her crying at one
