CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX
CHAPTER
THIRTY-SIX
Lana looked past their small group to the hustle and bustle going on around them. There was something about the whole exchange that kept bugging her.
“You said he was the demolitions expert on your Delta Force team, right?” Lana looked over at Jayson in thought.
Something about the way he kept calling her captain and brought up Jayson. How did he know about them, much less kept calling her by her military rank?
There was something she was missing and until she got Dani settled down and had time to calm her own nerves, she didn’t think she’d be able to think straight.
“Let’s get back to the house. Swift, you have the bug detectors with you, right?”
“Yep. I’ll check Jayson’s house for them and vid cams when we get back there. Once we’ve cleared everything, we can go forth and make sure all windows are secure and that the cameras are set up outside the house, front and back, while we do some more digging.”
“Alright, Ryan, I’m putting you and Jayson in charge of food tonight. I was going to cook for everyone, but let’s just order six large pepperoni and sausage pizzas. Grab some beer or wine while you’re at it.”
“What are you going to do, babe?” Jayson asked, pulling her back into his arms.
“Get Dani calmed down at the house, along with Jay. I know he’s probably heard about what’s happened from your parents by now, so I know his reaction is going to be worse than Dani’s.”
“I’ll have Mom and Dad bring him to the house so that you can talk to him with you and Dani there. Once he sees you guys are okay, he’ll be fine. Ryan just placed an order for the pizzas so it should be ready by the time we get there. I’ll grab the beers and meet you back at the house.”
Lana didn’t stop Jayson when he pulled her in and placed his lips on hers, giving her a slow soft kiss. She knew if they weren’t in the open, the kiss would have been significantly different.
Thirty minutes later, Lana was sitting on the couch with Dani in her lap and little Jay sitting next to her. Her team was surrounding her while Jayson’s parents stood in the background.
“Were you both hurt?” Little Jay asked, looking his mother and sister over as if he was the man of the house.
Lana felt the tears fighting to come out at how grown up her seven-year-old son sounded with that question. He shouldn’t be asking those kinds of questions, but he’d been through so much with his mother and sister.
“No, baby. Aunt Rocky kept Dani inside and the bad guy Mommy was trying to take out actually protected her from his friend that tried to harm me. We are going to be okay. Daddy and Uncle Ryan are on their way home with pizza for all of us to eat now.” Lana soothed her son’s hair back from his face as she leaned down and kissed his forehead.
“Promise you and Dani are okay? I can sleep in Dani’s room with her tonight in case she had any nightmares.” Jay looked at his sister and nodded affirmatively at her.
“We can do a fort on the floor if that’s okay with Mommy and Daddy.”
“That’s perfectly okay with me, baby. I think that would be fun for you two. I’ll help daddy set up the projector for you so that you can have your starry night theme in the tent.” Lana smiled at the two.
Lana truly had been blessed with her two children. They were close to one another and never hesitated to be there for each other.
She prayed no matter where life took them, they would still be that close when they got older. God help anyone who tried to come between them.
Lana looked up when she heard the front door open with Jayson and Ryan walked in with six pizza boxes and two large boxes of beer. She could tell Jayson was still on edge about earlier.
“Hey baby, why don’t you go with Grandma and get your food and eat. I’m going to go talk to Daddy about setting everything up for you two to have your fort in the bedroom.”
Lana got Jayson’s attention and nodded toward their bedroom as she walked away from the group and went into the room. She shut the door as she walked toward the closet to take her duty vest off.
She wouldn’t need it for the rest of the night. When she turned around, Jayson was standing in the doorway staring at her hard.
She kept her eyes on Jayson while he zeroed in hard on her as he stalked across the room after shutting the bedroom door. She knew he was holding on by a thread at the moment.
“Are you okay?” It wasn’t so much of a question as a demand, his rough hand going to her jaw and forcing her to meet his gaze when she looked away.
“I’m fine,” she said through gritted teeth.
But Jayson knew her better than anyone. Knew that the way her hands shook slightly, and she wouldn’t keep her eyes locked on his for more than a second said everything he needed to know.
“How about I help you calm down?” he whispered, his hand sliding from her jaw and down the curve of her shoulder.
He smiled at her as she shivered under his touch, even though she still wouldn’t look at him. God, his touch always made her want to just climb the man like a tree.
“Jayson, we have the team outside. We need to figure out what Angelo’s message is. I’m…”
She didn’t finish her sentence because she was cut off with Jayson’s lips crushed to hers. His strong arms went around her waist, pulling her closer as she instinctively wrapped her legs around his waist.
She knew she’d be cursing herself later for this, but once he set her on the dresser and she could feel the hard lines of his cock pressing against her through his jeans, all reason to say ‘no’ went out the window.
She was panting hard as he broke the kiss, his lips sliding down her neck as his fingers worked the buttons on her shirt.
