CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE
CHAPTER
THIRTY-NINE
Jayson called in and set out a BOLO on Angelo, while his brother Ryan did the same thing with his department. He gave the description of the motorcycle that Angelo took off on with the description of what he and the other man looked like from what Lana had told him.
Since the store where the incident went down, Ryan had requested for the store video to be retrieved so that they would have a better idea of what they were looking for on the second person who Angelo was with.
Once everyone had worked out a plan on what would happen when they apprehended Angelo, the large group split up and went their separate ways. Ryan went home to Jayme, while the women went back to Lana’s father’s house.
Jayson helped Lana settle the kids down and get them into their fort. Once they were down, it was time for him and Lana to have time for themselves.
He already had her twice today, once this morning when they woke up and when they’d got back after the attempted attack on her at the store. Jayson knew he could be ninety and still not have enough of Lana’s touch in his life.
“Are you okay, baby?” Jayson asked as he walked up behind her as she brushed her teeth in the bathroom.
“Yeah. Just tired. This whole case is exhausting. I feel like we’re missing something, and I can’t put my finger on it.”
Jayson could see the frustration in her eyes and the way her body tensed when she talked about it. He knew his wife always had this belief that she had to be the best of the best to earn her father’s love.
He just wished that she knew how much her father loved her. He still never told her about the fact that her father called him a dumbass for letting her get away the first time he saw him after having moved back home when he was medically discharged from the Army.
“Penny for your thoughts?” Lana asked as she finished rinsing her mouth out.
“Was remembering something your dad said to me the first time I saw him after coming home from being medically discharged from the Army. He read me the riot act for letting you get away. Told me I would rue the day I fucked up and let a piece of ass get between us. I have to admit, he was right. I was a dumbass for letting you get away without a fight.”
Jayson didn’t know what to think when he felt Lana’s arms circle around his neck and pull him into her. He loved it when she was wrapped around him the way she was now.
“We both made mistakes in our relationship back then. I also believe we need to stop living in the past and live in the present so we can be aware of our future.”
Jayson wrapped his arms around Lana and held her tightly for a few. He knew she was exhausted and sore, so he would not make a move before bed.
She needed her rest more than she needed him pawing at her the way he wanted to. Giving her a passionate kiss, trying hard to keep it short and sweet, he let every emotion he was feeling happen in that kiss.
When he found the ability to pull away, he rested his chin on the top of her head. Trying to control the raging hard-on he had just from her kiss, he started thinking back to the crime scene photos and counting numbers in his head.
“As much as I want to fuck you ten ways from Sunday, you’re exhausted, and I know I was rough with you earlier. Tonight, I just want to hold you and know that you’re safe.”
“Mmm. I am pretty exhausted. The shower helped loosen some aches and kinks from today. The ibuprofen is helping a lot too. Thank you. I always welcome being held by you. Never doubt that, Jayson.”
Jayson couldn’t help the shudder that went through his body at her words. She was his world.
He didn’t care that it took her father’s death to bring her back to him, or the fact that she kept his children from him. He was just grateful that she was here now, and he was going to do everything in his power to make sure she and their kids remain that way.
Jayson helped Lana climb into bed and crawled in behind her. He loved the fact that she didn’t argue with what side of the bed they would sleep on and trusted him to keep her safe.
For him, that was a huge thing. He knew Lana could take care of herself, she’d already proven that to him time and time again.
It was the fact that while she knew she could handle herself, she trusted him to keep her safe just as much as she trusted herself to do it. She felt safe enough to allow her guard down and let someone else take the reins.
He was almost asleep when there was a loud, insistent knock on his front door. Groaning, Jayson got up and went to his dresser to grab a pair of sweats to put on over his boxers.
When he moved toward the living room, he saw that Lana’s side of the bed was empty and she wasn’t in the bedroom or the bathroom. He knew she’d gone to answer the front door.
“What the fuck do you want, Ashley? We’re trying to sleep.”
What the fuck was Ashley doing at his front door? He couldn’t stand the bitch, and now she was on his doorstep.
“This is between me and Jayson. Not you, bitch!”
“I’d watch how you speak to my wife, Ashley. There is no reason for you to be on our fucking porch this late at night. Now, what the fuck do you want?”
“It’s time to stop fucking around and meet your son.”
