CHAPTER FORTY-TWO

CHAPTER

FORTY-TWO

Ryan’s admission had Lana stepping back in shock. So, Jayme didn’t have as strong of a relationship with the family as she had thought.

“Wait, how long have you two been married?” Lana asked, looking at Ryan in shock.

“Only a couple of months, really. Jayme was here in town visiting several months ago, she happened to be at Rusty’s when I met her.

She and a couple of friends lived in Austin, Texas, but came to visit with a family member of the friend.

I can’t remember the dynamics. But we had a lot of alcohol, laughter, sex and then I got a call a couple of months later saying I knocked her up, so I told her to come back here, and we’d get married. ”

“Wasn’t there ever any doubt about the baby being yours?” Sunny asked him.

“Honestly, yeah. Now and then, there is doubt. She won’t work now that we are married.

Which I put it to her not wanting to work for the first few months after the baby is born.

I’m fine with that. But yesterday, we got into a fight about how much money she’s been spending, and it wasn’t all on baby stuff. Her whole attitude turned ugly.”

“Do you know anyone she hangs out with while you’re at work or if she goes out?” Lana asked, confusion setting in about the woman Ryan was describing.

“No. Not really. I know she’s not had much to do with some of her friends from back west. I know she is now friends with the girl she had come out with the others to spend time with.”

“What do you know about her?” Sgt. Bueller asked, drawing Lana’s attention.

“Not very much,” Ryan admitted, his hands dragging through his hair. “I only met her that night at the bar and haven’t seen her again. She doesn’t bring any friends to the house that I know of.”

“Do you have cameras on the front porch so that you can see who is coming or going like Jayson does?” Lana asked as she nibbled on her lower lip.

“Yeah, but I have never looked at them. Why?” Ryan answered, looking between Lana and Jayson.

“Are they still those small ones that no one can see?” Jayson asked, smirking at his brother.

“Yeah, you were the one who suggested them after I bought the house. The same ones you have. No one knows they are there except for you, me, and Dad since he helped put them in.”

“Hold the hell up. You never told your wife about them?” Rocky asked in disbelief.

“Honestly, I forgot about them.” Ryan shrugged as he looked confused at Rocky for her outburst.

Lana leaned back in her seat and thought for several seconds. Jayme has a Jekyll and Hyde personality which she had kind of assumed but thought it was just her.

“Did you buy the house before you met Jayme or after?” Lana asked, as she clasped her hands over her belly area.

“Before. I’d only been out of the Army six months when I’d bought the house and put the cameras in. I think I’d been in the house for about four or five months when I’d met her.” Ryan sighed as he leaned forward.

“Jayson, does Jayme always bring food when you’re on the night shift?” Lana asked, quirking an eyebrow.

“No, not always. Once in a blue moon, when she’s trying to figure out who I’m with or try to get me to let her set me up on a date. Which never happens.” Jayson scrunched his face at the last portion of his statement.

“What has your mind spinning there, Ice?” Rocky asked, looking at Lana’s way at her expression.

“Ashley stopped by the house last night, yet she didn’t seem surprised to see me.

It was like she was determined to start shit with me and Jayson last night by claiming she had Jayson’s son, and it was time for him to own up to his responsibilities.

Few people, other than those sitting in this room and the Kenwoods, know that I’m staying with Jayson.

Most only know of one child, not two. Ashley knew about the twins.

Jayme, when I met her, tried to make it seem like she and Jayson had a thing and that the baby was his.

That’s why I assumed she was pregnant with his kid.

She didn’t even mention she was his sister-in-law.

When Jayson and I fought back at my father’s house that day, she sent me a little smirk, then glared at me when she found out we’d worked things out. ”

“You don’t think she’s trying something, do you?” Jayson asked Lana, looking between her and his brother.

“The only people who know I’m staying with you, and that the kids are there, are in this room, besides your parents.

We haven’t really told anyone about us working things out between us.

Jayme made it seem like you two were a couple when I did the walk of shame back home the next morning.

Jayme knows about us working things out because she’s Ryan’s wife.

She’s been privy to a few things. What if…

and hear me out on this…what if she and Ashley are actually friends and she’s the one giving Ashley information on you, besides Peter?

Peter hasn’t had access to you since we found out about his shit.

Yet Ashley is still getting information about you. ”

Lana looked at Jayson as he processed what she said. She honestly prayed, for Ryan’s sake, that wasn’t the case, but she had a strong feeling she was on the right track.

“I have Ryan’s door camera pulled up on the big screen. How far back do you want to go back right now?” Rocky asked as she fiddled with the laptop she was working on.

“Go back about three weeks before we got here for my father’s funeral,” Lana suggested. “That’s a starting point unless we need to go back further.”

When the video started playing, her stomach started churning. She hated it when she was right about hunches sometimes.
