CHAPTER FORTY-FIVE
CHAPTER
FORTY-FIVE
Lana opened her eyes and stared at her sergeant. She had been afraid of that as soon as she’d crossed paths with Hubbard three weeks ago.
“If that’s true, then Angelo’s position within the Soriano Cartel and MC is in danger. Hubbard knows who he is and knows that Angelo has a moral compass, the same as the Kenwood brothers. We have to pull him out and now,” Lana advised her sergeant.
“What if he’s testing Angelo to see if that moral compass changed? He knew you were the one to come after him. What if Angelo spun the story that you two created?”
“He would be the one person to know it was a fucking lie. Hubbard would have pulled him into the fold if anything we spun was true. The CIA created his cover and the information that is on there goes back to me or my C.O. so that if they need to check out his cover, we’re the ones to control the narrative.
Hubbard is going to see through all that bullshit immediately. ”
“How do you want to handle this?” Sgt. Bueller asked her, watching her closely.
“We need to find out where Angelo is hiding. Once we do that, we need to stage a bust, arresting him and his colleagues. Once we do that, we can get Angelo to safety.”
Lana started rubbing her head as she thought of what all they needed to do to find Angelo and get him out safely before it was too late. With Hubbard on the loose, their whole case could blow up on them.
“When was Hubbard released?” Lana asked, closing her eyes as she thought.
“Two days ago, but he’s already in the wind. He lost the tail that was placed on him two hours after he got released.”
“Well, fuck!” Lana muttered.
“Getting one of your migraines, aren’t you?” Sgt. Bueller asked, watching Lana closely.
“We don’t have time for me to have one. We have to find Angelo,” Lana growled at her sergeant.
“Lana, you know as well as I do if you don’t take care of it now, you’re going to be on your ass once you pass out from the pain of it out there. Take the rest of the day to fight this damn headache. We can handle finding Angelo. Once we find him, we’ll let you know,” Sgt. Bueller ordered her.
“Fuck! Fine. I’ll head back to the house and get some rest. Let Jayson know what is going on so he doesn’t go into panic mode,” Lana requested as she leaned her head back against the wall.
“I’m having him take you home and make sure you stay in bed.
Don’t argue with me, Lana. I know how you are.
Why do you think we always stayed with you?
Yeah, part of it is to make sure the kids were letting you rest, but it’s also to make sure you’re resting and not doing what you shouldn’t be, so you’re back with us at a hundred percent. ”
“I really hate you guys sometimes. Fine. I’ll wait here for him,” Lana grumped, sticking her tongue out at her team leader.
Lana watched as her team leader walked away, laughing at her childish gesture. Damn it, the woman had a point.
If they hadn’t been staying with her, she wouldn’t have rested. She would have been up dealing with the kids and doing her own investigations on the cases they were on at the time.
“Hey, Bueller said I needed to get you home and force you into a dark room after you take a hot shower. What’s going on, babe?”
“I get terrible migraines once in a while. Been happening for a while now. If I don’t take care of it now, then it will kick my ass down to the point I’m bedridden for at least two days.
Which, I tried to tell her, we don’t have the time for me to deal with this.
Not with Angelo’s life possibly being in danger as we speak. ”
“I’m going to take you home and get you in a hot shower, then darken the room and turn the A/C on to make the room colder for you. Then you’re taking your sexy ass to bed and deal with this. Let Ryan and your team do what they need to do. I’ll help them as much as I can from home.”
Lana huffed as she narrowed her eyes at Jayson. Looks like she was beat where this whole thing was concerned.
Between her team and Jayson, she knew she wouldn’t be able to fight them all in staying in the game. She knew they were right, and she needed to get this migraine under control.
In order for her to do that without repercussions, she needed to shut her brain off and lord help her, it was so damn hard. Especially right now with everything going on in this case.
“Fine! I’ll go home and take a hot shower and crawl in bed, under protest. Just find Angelo and bring him in. Whatever it takes. His life is in jeopardy, and we can’t afford to lose him or the intel he may or may not have for us.”
“We’ll find him, babe. Let’s get you home so that we can get you rested and back in the game.”
Lana let Jayson lead her out of the department to the car. Once they had gotten back home, she went and got into the shower, getting the water as hot as she could stand it and letting the water fall over her.
She hated when her migraines came on, but she knew it was a side effect from her brain not shutting off. Even in her damn sleep, her brain went into overdrive.
Once she got out of the shower, she went into her bag and pulled out the migraine pills she’d been prescribed to take when they came on. She knew it would knock her out and help shut off her brain as needed.
She hated taking any kind of sleep aid because of how they made her feel and the fact they made her vulnerable when she zonked out. When she was forced to take them, she was blessed that her team showed up for her to help with the twins.
She honestly didn’t know where she’d be right now if it wasn’t for her team. Once she had taken her medicine, she climbed into bed and closed her eyes as she said a silent prayer for Angelo and her team.
